From what I understand it's not the city asking for money. It's a few people involved in the project seeking more money basically to include all the bells and whistles that's wanted in the center. They're trying to build a top rate center here. It's going to be a great facility regardless.

Looks like there is a possibility that the design that is picked could push the cost from $65 million to as high as $90 million. (More than double the cost of DPAC.) But these are just rumors. The committee that picks the design is suppose to pick a design that falls under budget but some on the committee have more lofty dreams for a big, architecturally bold PAC with interior bells and whistles for Greensboro.

From what I understand the committee members are very wealthy individuals/donors. If they want a center more expensive than $65 million then they should foot the bill themselves. If they don't want to then they need to approve the design that allows for a $65 million center or less. Its like me saying I want a Porsche but only have a budget for Honda Civic. Since my budget only allows me to buy a Civic instead of a Porsche then I need to swallow my pride any just buy the Civic.

I actually agree. It seems they are making all the decisions so if they want a more expensive performing arts center these donors should come up with the extra money and not the taxpayers. I actually hope they can make it happen so Greensboro can have a performing arts center that will raise eyebrows from all over the southeast. A venue pushing $100 million would certainly be among the best in the southeast. Heck a $65 million facility would be an above average venue. If they can make it happen it will be a new chapter for the city in regards to funding very expensive urban projects. Spending that kind of money on one venue is really unheard of in Greensboro.

More than likely those who were against the venue from the beginning will say this is bait and switch.

Maybe it should be aptly name the Performing Aquatic Center since the budget for the aquatic center was blown to hell.

Demolition is well underway on War Memorial Auditorium. Premium parking fees at this site will help pay for the new Tanger Performing Arts Center downtown.

Demolition of Historic War Memorial Auditorium Begins

With construction fencing now up at the future Tanger Performing Arts Center site I would expect a final rendering to be made public shortly with construction to start shortly there after. Actual construction of the building is to begin this October but I think we will see site preparation to occur within the next month or so since construction fence is up already.

That made me laugh!

Back to the recently quoted article - I think it's clear that that this is not in anyway a worry about the PAC not being built or impressive. I do think though it is about earlier images thrown around saying it could look like this when that was not the official design.

I'm not even talking about this board/thread btw - I'm talking the news media and the people behind the PAC. I understand the need to get potential donors excited, but I never felt the costs listed for the project were right based off the idea that it was billed at wanting to be the largest in the state with some of the most advanced technology.

Hopefully the city goes for the most advanced technology/acoustics, and incredible sightlines from all seats instead of worrying about making the largest. The latter is just not needed and would be certain to cause cost overruns.

Looks like they are pretty set on 3,000 seats. What would drive the cost up on certain options would be exterior design and interior technology such as those big wall and ceiling video screens depicted in one of the renderings. The committee is going to have to make a choice. Pick an option that falls under budget or figure out how they are going to raise an additional 10 to 25 million dollars for a facility with a lot of bling. If they can do the later with private donations, great.
