So, this is a bit different. We are considering moving to the Winston-Salem area and with no children in the home (moved out on their own) and just the two of us, we are more interested in selecting a quiet neighborhood with an emphasis on being safe.

Close to shopping is okay...do not really wish to be close to any schools, thus not needing to worry about that aspect. We like to do things...museums, galleires, movies...but do not mind a drive. Not a big fan of traffic, however there are always side streets. Love trees and hills and such (moving from Asheville, NC after 7 years).

Know all about Greensboro, but it is a bit too far from where we will be working, thus looking at Winston-Salem and maybe, Kernersville (like that size town).

Saw this web-site and just thought we would ask from folk in Winston-Salem area. We will be renters for a while, until the roots have set in and just want to be sure we choose wisely. All input will be appreciated, including where to look and where to not look. Thank you.

Rent where it's convenient for work. Take your time to look round during that first year.
If/when you have any specific question... feel free to post it.

Hard to make any specific recommendations based on what you've said...there are tons of possibilities that would satisfy the general criteria you've described. If you could give more specifics perhaps we could help, for example:

--house, apartment, or condo?
--budget?
--in town or suburb?
--work location?

I haven't seen any areas in W/S that are really THAT bad... maybe run down, yes. Old Lexington Rd, the Waughtown area, parts of Academy St. are not too pretty looking.

I came here from NJ, and I think overall W/S is relatively quiet and safe. Boring as all get out, but quiet and safe!

There are certainly areas in Winston where crime is concentrated. It seems like every robbery you hear about is along Peters Creek Parkway, which is a bit strange, as Ardmore, just up from Peters Creek, is a nice place.

And Winston is as boring as you make it. There's plenty to do. Plays at UNCSA and elsewhere. Plenty of places to run and cycle. Some good restaurants. Lots of outdoor activities to the north and west. And if all that fails, a half hour to Greensboro, an hour to Charlotte, or an hour and a half to the Triangle.

As for the hills, I think the gentle Piedmont hills are mighty pretty all around Winston. They're not mountains, but Winston is less than a half hour from some of the little outlying mountains (Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock) and less than an hour from honest-to-goodness mountain ranges.

Sounds like the OP is probably looking for more a Kernersville or Clemmons situation, as it sounds like safety and a slow pace is more important than direct proximity to activities.

That's funny.. I don't hear much about robberies along Peters Creek... although I live right on the edge of W/S and Clemmons not towards the downtown side.

Maybe I'm just hyper aware. It does seem to be a road littered with all of the grungiest bits of WS, though. Strip clubs and pawn shops and used car lots and the like.

Yea that holds true...that's right along Academy St...Not exactly the first area I'd be choosing to take up residence.

Which is what's so funny. Go a couple blocks up Academy from Peters Creek in one direction and you're in the heart of Ardmore. Go a couple blocks up Academy in the other direction and you're in Old Salem. It's like all the crap rolls downhill from those nice areas into that one road.

And I wouldn't say its just around Academy that's less than nice. It's pretty much from Business 40 down to 40.
