...Winter Storm Watch in effect from Thursday evening through late Thursday night...
The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Winter Storm Watch...which is in effect from Thursday evening through late Thursday night.
* Locations...impacted areas will be along and northwest of a
line from Albemarle to Raleigh to Louisburg to Roanoke Rapids.
* Hazard types...the main precipitation type will be snow...
although a brief period of mixed snow and sleet is possible.
* Snow accumulations...accumulations in the watch area are
expected to range from one inch to 3 inches... with isolated
higher totals possible.
* Timing...most of the snow is expected to fall between 6 PM
Thursday and 4 am Friday morning.
* Impacts...snow on roads may make driving treacherous...
especially on bridges and overpasses. In addition... after the
precipitation ends by late Thursday night and temperatures drop
below freezing... the wet roads may refreeze in spots...
especially bridges and overpasses. This black ice could make
travel dangerous Friday morning.
* Winds...winds from the northeast will strengthen Thursday
afternoon to 15 to 25 mph... gusting up to 25 to 30 mph. These
winds will continue into the evening before shifting to
northwest and weakening toward midnight.
* Temperatures...readings will fall through the 30s Thursday
evening... and drop to lows into the upper 20s to lower 30s by
Friday morning.
* Visibilities...visibilities may be reduced to less than one mile in snow.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow accumulations that may impact travel. People in the watch area should closely monitor the latest forecasts... and remain alert for any further warnings or advisories.
From The NWS - Raleigh for the Piedmont Triad of NC
EXPECT RAIN TO CHANGEOVER TO HEAVY WET SNOW IN THE TRIAD REGION
BETWEEN 6 AND 8 PM. THIS TRANSITION WILL SHIFT EWD WITH TIME AS MID
LEVEL LOW TRAVERSES THE REGION. THIS TRANSITION SHOULD REACH THE
THE TRIANGLE AREA AND THE NORTHERN-CENTRAL COASTAL PLAIN BETWEEN 9
AND MIDNIGHT. THE TRACK OF THE 700MB CYCLONE SUGGEST A GOOD
POTENTIAL FOR A SNOW BAND TO OCCUR OVER SECTIONS OF THE
PIEDMONT...POSSIBLY NEAR OF JUST WEST OF THE TRIANGLE. IN
ADDITION...WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO HAVE SOME LIGHTING OCCUR
WITHIN THE HEAVY SNOW BANDS.
SNOWFALL RATES OF 1-2 INCHES PER HOUR NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION. THIS
WILL LEAD TO SNOW AMOUNTS OF 2-4 INCHES IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. A
WARM TOP SOIL...WARM PAVEMENT AND HEAVY RAIN OCCURRING PRIOR TO
CHANGEOVER TO SNOW WILL INITIALLY LIMIT SNOW ACCUMULATION.
STILL...EXPECT 2-4 INCHES OVER PARTS OF THE PIEDMONT MAINLY IN
GRASSY AREAS WITH 1-2 INCHES OF SLUSH DEVELOPING ON ROADWAYS. WITH
TEMPS EXPECTED TO FALL PRIOR TO DAYBREAK TO NEAR OR SLIGHTLY BELOW
FREEZING...DRIVING MAY QUICKLY BECOME TREACHEROUS/DANGEROUS
OVERNIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING.
AGAIN...THE THING THAT BOTHERS ME THE MOST IS THE LACK OF COLD AIR
IN PLACE PRIOR TO STORM ARRIVAL. A DELAY OF CHANGEOVER BY ONE-TWO
HOURS WILL CUT INTO EXPECTED SNOW AMOUNTS. IF THIS DELAY
OCCURS...FINAL SNOW AMOUNTS MAY BE AT LEAST HALF OF WHAT IS
CURRENTLY FORECAST (IF NOT MORE).
Back up in Maryland... this sort of report would have everyone scrambling for milk, bread and TP.
I actually need some milk...
It will surely send folks running for the perishables. It's such a pain when you actually need bread and milk, but the aisles are clean because people have decided that the 6 hours they'll be vaguely snowbound will be just long enough to go into shock from lack of carbs and lactose.

LOL! I've never understood the bread and milk thing! I'm pretty sure Greensboro is usually pretty good with getting three or four inches of snow off the road in a matter of a day or two....lol!
