Hi my husband just got a job working near the airport. We have never been in this area and don't know where to look. We are open to apartments, townhomes, and homes. We have two little kids and want something safe and family friendly. We don't mind a commute if it means we are in a more family area with good schools. Can anyone give me suggestions?

We live near the Kirkwood area. That's off Lawndale Ave., near the Battleground/Lawndale split off and right across the street from a shopping center. Actually, we live one street over from official Kirkwood. Kirkwood is cute, smaller, older homes and lots of families. I personally think the homes are overpriced just because it's Kirkwood, but it is very family friendly with Friday Happy Hours at different homes in the summer, a small park with playground, a 4th of July parade, etc. Homes even one street over are generally less expensive, but then you're not part of Kirkwood . Our kids are grown, so I'm not in the loop on schools, etc., but I believe the elementary school is considered good. We're about 12-15 minutes from the airport, depending on the time of day and it's an easy drive via Bryan Boulevard (my husband flies to Chicago a couple of times a month). But, if you gave an idea of your budget, it would be easier to give you more helpful information. Any neighborhood with quick access to Bryan Boulevard would make for an easy work commute.

If little means not in school yet... then you're golden.

New arrivals are best advised to rent and relatively close to the job(s).
Do that. Then take a year (or two) to REALLY look around and decide what suits.

That's the second step. Don't try to do it all in on the first jump.
