I have job opportunities in both the Triad area and Greenville, SC. I have been able to do enough research to be comfortable moving to either area, except that I have a 14-yr old with autism and haven't found much on the quality of special education in the schools. Does anybody have any insights? (We could live in either Forsyth or Guilford county in NC; or Greenville or Spartanburg county in SC.)
Right now he is mainstreamed for science and social studies but has a "support lab" to help him understand the material. He is in a separate class for math and language arts because he is about four grade levels behind.
Greenville is a cute town but NC has better services the SC does...
I take exception to your description of Greenville (SC) but I do agree with your blanket statement regarding NC's state government services (although I do enjoy lower taxes here).
My wife is from Greensboro (we visit occasionally - several times per year) and we currently reside just south of downtown Greenville. There is a similar thread from the OP in the Greenville-Spartanburg sub-forum (with my response).
I have a step-son with ASD, we're in W-S (Forsyth), he just started middle-school this year so it's been a tough adjustment, but the school is great. He graduated elementary school mainstreamed in everything but language arts. We've just now gone back to having him mainstreamed (core subjects) in Science, ...and concentrating on helping him make the "leap" to middle school culture.
As far as the teachers, assistants, specialists and school psych. are concerned, I am impressed... administration, not so much, but that's par anywhere. It's worth it to be involved and stay in touch with teachers, the more you can fill them in on your child, the better they adapt to his or her needs.
I'm relatively new (3 years) to the US (Canadian ex-pat), so I can't really compare to anything but the Canadian (Ontario) system, overall I think they do the best job they can but, the funding is a joke. It looks like there will be new cuts with the current Gov./House/Senate being as they are.
