I am seriously thinking about moving to Greensboro. I have been doing research on the city.

I have a very, very, very, big fear of spiders (I can't even look at a picture of a spider). I have come to understand that North Carolina is home to both black widows and brown recluse spiders. As you might imagine this freaks me a lot!

My question is: How common is it to encounter one of these guys? I'm already researching different anti-spider products to fortify my apartment but since it is highly likely I will not be in my apartment 24/7 I'm worried about encountering one of these guys when out and about.

There are so many we have to pick them off of us every morning, but you get use to it.
I'm kidding.
If spiders bug you that much I recommend the place you choose to live be a newer one as they tend to be tighter than older construction.

I'm 60 years old and lived 56 years in NC (20 in the Triad) and 4 years in upstate SC... never seen either one personally.

Like roadpony I've been in NC a number of years, and I've never seen a brown recluse. I have seen plenty of black widows. In my younger days most all of those sightings were me invading their territory, like poking around wood piles or exploring old barns and outbuildings. They are here, but they are very shy and many people never encounter them.

But since moving to the Winston-Salem area I've seen a number of them around my home. Not really their fault, though--my house borders a patch of woods, so they find their way to my place. I also have lots of stacked stonework around my house that provides plenty of great places for them to hang out. But even after 20 plus years here I've never been bitten, nor has anyone else in my family. They really don't bother me, so I pretty much leave them alone unless they're too close to the house. I've never seen one inside the house, by the way.

You just have to be careful and use some common sense. Never stick your hands/fingers into dark spaces you can't see, and be sure to examine closely any old boards or other debris you may pick up. You can get spider repellents and insecticides if you want, but chances are you won't need to bother especially in an apartment.

In my 50 plus years I've never known anyone personally who was bitten by either a black widow or a brown recluse. It's just a rare thing.

I have a fear of spiders myself, so you are def. not alone! I have lived in NC my entire life and have never seen a brown recluse, but have seen a black widow. Granted I live in the country and we have lots of things crawling around. If you live in an apartment the likelihood of seeing one is pretty rare. Brown recluse, if I am not mistaken (and I very well may be) mainly live in far western NC, so that shouldn't be a problem for you in Greensboro (and might explain why none of us have ever seen one).

If you're living in an apartment just keep the place clean and exterminated and you should be fine. I will say this though, the one spider we do have plenty of here that will give you the creeps is the wolf spider. Those things can get big (not tarantula big or anything) and are usually nocturnal. They don't build webs, but feed on other insects and they can run like nobody's business. It's inevitable that at least one will sneak into your house at least once in your life. They're not poisonous, but are pretty creepy. Sorry just a heads up.
