Workers in Winston-Salem and the surrounding region are commuting farther to work, according to the latest U.S. Census figures. The change is likely a result of job losses, especially among workers who live on the periphery of the city.

Im not surprise on the graph provided in the link below. Winston Salem is surrounded by rural counties and Winston Salem is the easiest of commute for the surrounding areas. The commute from Davidson county to Forsyth for jobs has been going on since I was a kid. The growth in Midway, Welcome and Walburg has attracted people looking for the good schools and low property taxes.

In Forsyth, the number of workers commuting out of the county rose from 19.3 percent to 20.3 percent during that period. The number leaving Guilford County rose from 12.2 to 14.5 percent.

I have about a 20-25 minute (13 mile) commute, from Wallburg area (Davidson Co.) to W-S (a couple miles south of Hanes Mall, off Stratford Rd).
