What they didn't tell is the money came from no longer sponsoring a NASCAR team.

What is it with North Carolina and banks and what's in the water in Winston-Salem? Wachovia then and now BB&T...so when do they move their HQs to Charlotte? J/K, I don't Charlotte will get this one.

Wachovia didn't actually move its HQ to Charlotte...but merged with First Union, which was already HQ in Charlotte. The newly-formed Wachovia kept the Charlotte HQ after the merger. BB&T could be the target of a takeover in the future, so who knows...

Thanks for clarifying, I do remember the merger and should have stated such, I've been banking with Wachovia/First Union/Wells Fargo since the 80s. Still, it's good to see BB&T moving up the ranks and if they do merge, hopefully it's with another NC-based bank so the HQ remains local.

Funny you should bring up Wachovia in this forum. What was a well-respected, solidly run institution for over 110 years or so in WINSTON-SALEM, took the ole boys at First Union in CHARLOTTE about 6 years to run it into the ground. So the joke is not on Winston-Salem, I would say, but Charlotte, and its banker's abilities to manage.

As for BB&T, it's profits have nothing to do with NASCAR, or the lack thereof. That must have come out of far left. BB&T is one of the best, if not the best, banks in the country in terms of management, and running it's ship like a business to the benefit of it's shareholders. It makes BofA look silly. My only hope is that BB&T will continue to grow and continue to bolster it's hold in Winston-Salem.

I hope it doesn't happen. Charlotte doesn't need to take everything away from Winston-Salem (e.g., Wachovia, Piedmont Airlines, NC Dance Theatre, etc.).

Of course Winston should always worry about a take over. Greensboro lost its fortune 500 insurance company Jefferson-Pilot Life to Philadelphia based bank Lincoln Financial. However it wasn't a total loss. Lincoln Financial still made Greensboro the headquarters for its insurance division. I see a similar situation in Winston should it get taken over. BB&T will always play an important role in the business community.
