lovely, quiet place with beautiful large trees and friendly people.
The houses are all from the 50s or 60s.
I like older neighborhoods but refuse to pay the price of the already rebuilt older frame homes...
and just didn't want to take on rebuilding one that needed it done. Plus the lack of garage space.

I did cruise through a few west end ranch neighborhoods and noticed a lot of big old Buicks and Cadillacs at each house. They kind of reminded me of retirement communities. Hopefully I can make it back soon to check things out in person again.
"west end ranch neighborhoods"? So, to clarify, West End is a specific neighborhood (which isn't very big) and there aren't many (any?) ranch homes there. If you were seeing ranches, you were likely in either parts of Buena Vista or Country Club, and depending on what block you're on, those areas can definitely skew older, in terms of average occupant age.

The areas commonly known as West End and Buena Vista are closest to downtown and, for the most part, the most expensive real estate in Winston. If you MUST have a three car garage, I agree with others posting here that you will be hard pressed to find such in either area. You will likely NOT find a 3 car garage in fact in any of the "historic" areas on town.

If you can live without a garage and your priority is being close to the downtown core, just about all the areas I can think of have been mentioned. I didn't see the Country Club area, which is roughly bordered by West End, Stratford Rd, Reynolda Rd and Business 40. I actually think this area might be of interest to you. The homes are a little newer than you will find in West End, Buena Vista, Ardmore or Washington Park. Many have been remodeled and many have the large garage you seem to desire. The area is not terribly far from the core (but walking might be a stretch) and there is easy access to major parkways/highways to get you easily from one side of town to the other.

From what know, there is a farily wide spread as far as home prices are concerned. Lot's will depend on the state of renovation of course as well as size and location. There are plenty of $1MM plus homes but there should also be some availability much lower than that. Good luck with your search!

You won't find more than a (mid 30's Ford sedan sized) single garage.
If still standing, such is more like a garden tool and mower shed than a garage.

Once you're reconciled to the notion of having to drive anywhere to do anything...
there are OTHER areas in the city to look aside from the previously mentioned northern suburbs.
There are reasons... but they'll usually cost a fair bit less too.

There are plenty of two-car garages in Ardmore. They're not huge, but they exist. We have one.
