Red face Jet engine jobs?

Hello! I just read about the new GE/Honda engine plant being built in Burlington. My husband is a certified airframe and powerplant mechanic who currently overhauls JT9 engines for Kalitta Air in Oscoda, MI. I am whithering in this very rural area and want to move in the next 2 years as the kids will be both in school at that point and I will be ready to re-enter the work force. There are no jobs that pay more than $8 an hour in my field in this area so the best option to make us both happy is to move. Hubby likes the idea of building new engines instead of repairing old ones, so GE/Honda sound like good options and we've heard lots of good about NC (seems like half of Michigan is moving there!)

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get hubby's name to the right people at GE? We have time yet as we aren't in a hurry... hope to visit the area, also, before we make our final decision. Also, we'd be looking for a small town to live in within a reasonable commute to the Burlington/ Greensboro and Raleigh/Durham areas with excellent schools (year-round is very appealing), low taxes (Ha! Is it just a fairy tale?) and decent amounts of acreage available for not outrageous prices. We like to ride ATV's, camp, garden and might be interested in having a very small farm (couple of chickens, maybe a cow or two). I am currently a home-based travel agent and stay-at-home mom but have worked at Costco before and loved it. I'd also be interested in getting a job in the cafeteria of the public school district or maybe a bank. I have a degree in hotel/restaurant management so customer service is my thing, but I can't do hotel/restaurant hours now that I have kids! Obviously, hubby's job is more important than mine, but I'd like options this time!

Anyway, there's our dream and our qualifications.... if anyone has any great ideas, I'd welcome your input. Also, just how miserable are the summers there? Thanks!

Another place you might look is in GA. Lockheed in Marietta is building the Raptor, and Robins AFB in Warner-Robins is staffed with civilian mechanics and all of the Air Force's jets come through there every 5 years to be overhauled.

Thanks, NorthmeetsSouth, but I'm thinking Georgia might be too steamy in the summer months. Aren't you about out of water, also? Sorry... couldn't resist that comment. But hubby would enjoy the military jets, so it's worth considering!

Both Hondajet & Timco are in Greensboro, so that may be a place to check on. They've started the training classes for Hondajet already, tho the plant won't be open for a few more months. So those may be places to try as well.

Outside of Greensboro (not city limits) taxes are cheaper and there's land to be had. Also in the surrounding counties (randolph county, Rockingham county) there's plenty.

Good luck!

Hello Yourhometriad... so Hondajet is in Greensboro already? I thought they were just building the new plant in Burlington.... that's something to think about. My hubby worked for Timco up here in northern MI... they seem unstable up here... keep hiring then laying off people. As a matter of fact, he was laid off from Timco in 2002 and when we decided to move back to the area, he took the Kalitta position to avoid them (once bitten, etc). Anyway, thanks for the tips. I read elsewhere in this board that Chapel Hill has great schools... are Greensboro area schools or Burlington comparable? Are they all consolidated schools districts around there?

check your report cards- ReDir
and compare- we have good schools in Guilford County and it costs less than trying to live in Chapel Hill. In fact, many folks who work in the area around CH live in one of the small cities outside, including mebane, Saxapahaw, and even Burlington!

Good luck!

If anyone out there works for Hondajet or GE and has some advice or comments to make about the jobs available, we're all ears... I'll check back every so often to see if anyone drops a note. Thanks.
