I live in Kernersville and work in Greensboro and it just occurred to me that I've never seen a Sheetz inside of the city? I hit them up quite often because the gas is decent, the hot food, beer, and the convenient drive thru. When I'm in Winston, I don't see them like I do in Greensboro. I wonder what the deal is with that? Any thoughts?
I noticed they are everywhere in Greensboro particularly on the west side. There is even a Sheetz in midtown. I did look up Winston-Salem and there are three there. Not sure why they have a small number if Sheetz there.
Yeah, until I started working in Greensboro. I'd assumed that the chain was purposely staying in small towns. I noticed them in Kernersville and Walkertown when I moved there. The first one I ever saw was over 10 years ago when I was visiting Greenville, NC where I went to college. The ones that are in Winston are all basically on the outskirts of the city except for the one on Stratford Rd. I wonder if they were kept out by some kind of business law? Like you say, they're everywhere in the boro.
I wonder how dominant Quality Mart and Speedway are in Winston-Salem.
I know here in Durham, we only have three Sheetz locations (until 2015, it was just one location) and over 30 Family Fares. They have better penetration in Wake County.
I'm not sure why there aren't more Sheetz (Sheetzes?) in Winston. As others have mentioned, there are a few, but not many. At some point there was one in the works at Silas Creek and Fairlawn, but I don't know for certain that it's still in the works. (There was some concern about putting a gas station so close to the BB&T server farm at Sunnyknoll, as I recall.)
Apparently the Sheetz distribution center is in Burlington, so maybe that's why they'd rather build more in Greensboro than target the Winston market more heavily? Just a guess.
I used to work for sheetz, Store #509 on battleground, I remember asking my district manager shawn about why there is such a large presence of sheetz in Greensboro and he said that Greensboro is the main focus of Sheetz in North Carolina, something to do with the Oil pipeline and oil farm.
Currently there are 7 sheetz in Greensboro with more coming to the Greensboro area.
There are nearly as many Sheetz in WS as Greensboro. WS locations are spread out surrounding the city more or less whereas Gboro locations are lumped on one side.

Speedway has a pretty good presence here, not so much for QM.
