I purchased a farm a couple of years ago and have been in dispute since the purchase on how to get to it. It seems that a road we had used and others had used for 80 years is now denied to us, because the man who purchased this sliver of land doesn't want me to use it. I am stunned that I spent a fortune and no one seems to be able to figure this out. Any ideas?

If it a private road and is on someone elses property they have every right to decide who will be allowed access on their property.

Many times there are exceptions to this - there could be any of various types of easements given in the past.

Did you buy title insurance? If so, check your policy, it may say things about your access.

Assuming you have the "usual" Warranty Deed, a good real estate attorney would most likely be able to straighten it out.

Good luck! Let us know the progress.

actually, many cities have codes against forceably land-locking someone else's property. If there's a deeded easement recorded, this person cannot keep you from using the road. If there isn't, you may have to speak to someone downtown to keep using the access, especially if you have used it in the past and can prove it.

Otherwise, you may have to battle this person in court, which I hate for you.
