My husband is probably going to accept a job offer that is in downtown Winston-Salem. So, we're doing our relocation research.
We have 4 kids and one on the way. We homeschool, but, of course, want a good neighborhood which usually means somewhere with good schools.
We are hoping to buy a house under 300k. We want a bigger yard with mature trees if possible.

So, from the research I've done it looks like for various reasons Kernersville and Clemmons are recommended over staying inside the Winston-Salem city limits. I noticed crime rates are lower and schools seem to be rated better overall.
I did notice that New Sherwood has decently rated schools, but that house prices are slightly higher, too. Though, if it's far superior, we are willing to pay a bit more.

Anyhow, I would LOVE thoughts on the subject! Which is better, Kernersville or Clemmons? Or is there somewhere that would be even better for our growing family? (kids range in ages from not yet born to 11)

TIA!

"Better" is such a subjective term. One person's "better" is another person's "worse." Both communities are family-friendly and popular with a lot of people. I'd suggest that as soon as you get a chance to schedule a visit, drive around both communities and see which one "feels" better to you.

Personally, I prefer to be in the city rather than suburbs, and would prefer Sherwood or New Sherwood over Clemmons or K'ville. However, I'm near retirement age and have never had children, so my priorities are totally different from yours.

Whatever area you pick, I don't think you can go wrong. Best wishes on your move.

BTW, there is a major multi-year highway improvement project scheduled for a section of Business 40, I believe between First Street and US 52, in the not too distant future. Commuting to downtown from Clemmons is likely to be more aggravating than driving in from K'ville or New Sherwood.

I like Kernersville, but not a fan of rush hour traffic.

I love where we live near Wallburg, NC (and take every opportunity I get to say so - lol) - it's 15-20 minutes to downtown Winston-Salem. Love our neighborhood (Meadowlands), but that wouldn't be a good fit for a large yard and mature trees.

I agree with the "one person's best isn't another person's best" sentiment. That's why I tried to give as much background as I could hoping for more accurate info that way. If I had no children, our search would certainly have a different end.

Thanks for the heads up about the construction future! That's really good to be aware of.

I'll glance in Wallburg emelvee. I do like large yards though.... But really, I'm still open and willing to look into all options!

Clemmons boasts a thriving commercial corridor (most chain restaurants and a few that are unique plus Food Lion and a beautiful Lowes Foods as well as dry cleaners and other shopping that is best handled locally). FWIW Schools are good and property taxes are very low and services are well done (snow removal, trash, recycling, leaf and limb removal). Crime is low as you would expect. Many churches. Many different neighborhoods/subdivisions with different characteristics. Definitely worth a look.

We toured around this past weekend. We decided on a house in Clemmons, and are really looking forward to living in that area. Thanks for all the help!

Had I seen this thread earlier, I would have said Sherwood. We're in Ardmore, but Sherwood's on our radar when we eventually upgrade, size wise.

Still, of the areas you mentioned, Clemmons would definitely be my choice over Kernersville. Welcome to the area.

Born and raised in Kernersville. Spent a lot of time in Clemmons because I had good friends there. Kernersville is a better location because it's right in the middle of Winston, Gboro & High Point so you have a lot more variety. Also, the town offers more restaurants, shopping and everything I can think of than Clemmons. Kernersville has a lot of history and a beautiful downtown area with historical homes and shops. You feel like you're in Mayberry! It also has movies in the park in the Summer for families, festivals in the Spring & Summer with rides, food and music, the BEST fireworks around on the 4th of July & their hometown parades are always fun. Clemmons is VERY nice, more upper scale than Kernersville but just doesn't offer as much as far as shopping and restaurants...and no cute downtown. Clemmons does have Tanglewood golf coarse and it has awesome lights at Christmas time, playgrounds and other festival things. Kernersville does have a few more low income areas than Clemmons, but the good outweighs the bad, in my opinion. Both are great places with great people!
