Live here High Point ..work in RTP ..?
I work for IBM currently from home but planning to move to IBM in RTP. My wife is completing her residency in july 08, and now a days applying/looking for a job in RTP area , but most of the offers she is getting are from High Point or nearby areas. So we may move to High Point.
My wife like to stay closer to her work so I will be doing much of driving to my work. I like to get your idea on how much of travel it is from High Point to RTP area and how feasible it is to commute on daily basis.
And , are there any nice areas (good market, shopping, food, houses etc) 15-20 minutes drives from east of High Point (towards RTP ) that will cut down my travel time a bit.
Thanks

I don't know what time of day you'll be making your commute, but I agree with findinghope that it will be at least an hour, my guess is closer to two once you hit traffic around RTP.
You might want to look at the Eastern side of Greensboro (Whitsett, Sedalia, Colfax, Gibsonville), and possibly push out East into Alamance County (Burlington, Graham, Mebane) or even further out into Orange County (Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, Carrboro).

Depending on where you are in RTP, it will be over an hour. Greensboro to Raleigh is at least 1.5 hours. I would agree with superk- try Whitsett or Gibsonville- 15 mins to Gboro, 10 to Burlington, an hour to Raleigh... I sold a house there (that may be going back on the market soon) to a couple where the husband worked in Durham and the wife in GSBO. Worked out perfectly for them.
Good luck!

Tri Travel for two
My thoughts on your situation.
The travel times that have been posted are with optimal conditions.
Since I drive I40 to I85 to NC147 to RTP at least once a week, I schedule my trips outside of the busier times. Normal "rush hour" time commutes could easily double your times.
Another option that has not been mentioned, is the train service between Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro and High Point. It is unlikely that it would work, as it is currently only one round trip a day, leaving High Point at about 8:00 AM and arriving Raleigh at about 9:45 AM or so and leaving Raleigh about 5:45 PM and ariving High Point about 7:00 PM. If I remember correctly, it is the Carolinian and you can find out more at the Amtrak site.
Since you stated your wife will be completing her residency, I am assuming that you mean that she is looking for an offer in the medical field. If that is the case, I feel that she will have more opportunities in the Triangle (even though they have not come through yet!) than in the Triad area and I would heavily weight that option.
Good Luck!

Thanks all for suggestions.
Yes my wife is Internal Medicine MD and looking for a Hospitalist Physician job , actually she had few days off from residency last week so started looking for a job and all recruiters were offering positions outside RTP areas (High Point, Rocky Mount, Handerson, GreensBoro etc) , we ourselves were surprised that no options in RTP area, but I think VQ1 is right the jobs will come out sometime in first qtr of next year, however in the mean time we are trying to get as much info we can about the surrounding areas if we don't get much options.
High Point , Greenboro looks really far from RTP for regular commmute. Currently we are in Iowa city and most drive we do here is 10-15 minutes from any one point to the farthest point. so hour plus dive will sure make me crazy.
We found another options but that was in Handerson , 50 miles north of RTP, read about the place but did not find any positive about that town, so checked Oxford to live but again that would be far from RTP.
I think RTP area would work best for both of us, but seems like medical school in the area provides surplus number of physician for RTP area's hospitals. And she like to provide inpatient care in a big hospital so a private office/practice is no option.
Any doctors / Hospitalist here in the forum who can give us some guidance on how the job situation is here in RTP area.
I work from home currently so this site has become my best adviser for some time.. i like to thank eveyone for their suggestions and welcome more idea ..
cheers

I live in Burlington (about 8 minutes south of I-85/I-40 corridor) and I work for a company in RTP that sits right next to the IBM campus. It usually takes me 45-50 minutes to commute from my driveway to my office building every day (with average traffic). High Point (near the hospital) would probably take me about the same amount of time or maybe a little longer (considering the time it takes to get to that area of High Point off of the highway).

Has she looked at Alamance Regional in Burlington? You could live in Hillsborough or Mebane and both commute. Since your goal is to work in RTP without a bad commute, that does limit her choices of hospitals between GSO and Raleigh.
Have she looked at the area east of Raleigh? I don't know if the medical centers in Raleigh have any satellite hospitals in places like Garner or outlying suburbs. You might check the Raleigh forum for that.
Good luck.

Perhaps your wife should contact the hospitals directly?
In Raleigh there's Wake and Rex Hospitals and what use to be called Raleigh Community
In Durham there's Duke and what use to be called Durham Regional
In Chapel HIll there's UNC Hospital
In Burlington there's Alamance Regional
I think most of these have a website where they may post opportunities....

I commute daily from McLeansville NC to RTP NC
During Rush hour no accidents it's about 45-50 minutes at 72mph
Actual route 2 miles off exit 132 in McLeansville NC (10 miles east of Greensboro)
follow 85 North to 147 South exit on TW Alexander go 3 miles to work, two traffic lights.
If an accident occurs in morning usually adds about 10 minutes
If an accident occurs in evening it could add a whole hour.
Alternate routes are about 4-6 roads connect south to 64 and then take 421 back into Greensboro or about the same number of roads connect north to 70 which ussually gets most of the diverted traffic and doesn't save much time if any, many lights.
I moved from North Ridge Country club area in North Raleigh near intersection of Falls of the Nuese and Spring Forest, where it took 30 minutes in morning and 45-50 in evening to get from Falls and 540 to same location off TW alexander.
Sure you put alot of gas in car and miles on it, and run through tires every two years, but the commute is far less stresful then North Raleigh Traffic.
If you live further west from my location at exit 132 off 85/40 it's add atleast 10-15 minutes bringing commute time to South East Greensboro to RTP to 60-65 mintues, once you pass MLK/421 intersection you enter 40/bus85 section that Greensboro residents call death valley, speed drops to 55 and lanes shrink to 2 and you have many exit's left and right, Elm Eugene and Randleman, then 85 bus and 40 split, to get to this point, your looking over 75-85 minutes.
There are a number of developments going up around Mount Hope Church road exit 132 off 40/85 and McConnell off 40/85 starting well under 200k
if you want a bit nicer exit 134 Rock Creek Dairy has a nice section about 10 minutes from 40/85 prices around 300-500k
Happy Commuting
Hope that helps some people
