Good thrift stores in Greensboro? (High Point, Haw River: sales, consignment, house)

I'll be moving to Greensboro in June and I am a thrifty mcthrifterson. I've done pretty well in NY managing my budget by buying furniture, clothes, and other household goods in pretty nice condition at thrift stores and yard sales.

Will I have any luck with this down there?

I only ask because I used to live in a place where I scoffed at thrift shops because it really was just throwaway junk that smelled funny.

You're moving to what was once a furniture-making mecca. It's not any more but the thrift stores can have real deals on good stuff. But you have to keep a it and know what you're seeing.

There is an excellent hospice resale store in Haw River. I haven't been to any in Greensboro.

You have the publicized suspects; Goodwill & Salvation Army as well as consigment shops like The Red Collection, and there is a Habitat Restore too.
Dig around on Google and you will find additional places to the examples I named.

I remember in the 90's a house off Lee Street near Aycock and by todays terms this person would be called a hoarder. He had cool unique stuff to sale but I was a young 20 year old budget so I basically just looked. I would love to find that place or something similar since re-purposing stuff is in.

Freedom House Thrift on Battleground (across from Brassfield). There is a good will about half a mile north on other side of the road. Freedom house has great clothes at incredible prices...(this is a pretty well to do area and they get great donations)

The good will on North Elm is very good also


For furniture and other stuff I'd look at Craigslist and yard sales. The weather is great here in June and people really like yard sales down here..

There is a Salvation Army Select store on North Elm that has gently used, higher end items--very classy store.

Check out All State Restaurant Equipment on South Elm. They have a separate room where they sell used dishes, glasses and other interesting items. It's a fun place to browse. You may buy things there that you didn't know you needed.

Ditto to the prior poster on the Red Collection. They have two locations--one on Holden Street and one on Mill Street. You can find some good furniture and decorating items at both stores. Very knowledgable staff. They have some pricy items too, so if you see something gorgeous, look at the price tag before you set your heart on it! Across the street from the Red Collection is the Shoppes on Patterson (on Patterson of course). It's interesting and worth a visit.

Plato's Closet on Battleground has gently used clothes and a great jeans selection. It caters to a younger crowd.

Coco's Corner on Battleground Avenue is small but it has some interesting clothing now and again. Helpful staff.

Songbird Consignments on Lawndale has a large selection of clothes, shoes and jewelry. They also have wedding dresses and formals. Very helpful staff.

Furnitureland South has a salvage store in High Point on Main Street. Great place for odds and ends and you will find some great prices.
