In the GSO VS Roanoke thread, I mentioned Smith Mountain Lake being close to Roanoke. When I lived in VA, I LOVED heading up to SML to hang out at the resort, go boating, and listening to live music in the evenings during the summer. Is there a lake resort that is as lively close to the Greensboro area?

Not that I can think of... certainly nothing to compare to Smith Mtn Lake. And please, don't even suggest Belews Creek Lake.

But actually, Smith Mtn Lake isn't that far of a drive from G'boro for weekends.

Not being a lake goer you may check the sites of some of the larger lakes in the area, most of which can be done within a hour's drive such as; Lake Norman, Jordan Lake, Baden (Baiden?) Lake.

Badin!

High Rock is nice too, but I don't know that I would put it in the resort category.

So how developed are these lake areas? Do they have "beaches" where you can hang out at the water, places to rent pontoon boats, nice restaurants for dinner?

Smith Mountain Lake certainly isn't a terrible drive up the road, but I guess I was just wanting to know if there was something closer. If I ever struck it rich, I would most definitely buy a house at Smith Mountain Lake. Absolutely love that area!

High Rock Lake does not. It is mostly privately owned. There is a marina and campground, and the restaurants sound like hot dog places. It is mostly for boating and fishing. I think the banks are too steep for a decent beach.

Oh OK. That's good to know. At least there are some places to fish though!

Travel down Rt. 8 through Southmont and you will come to a public swimming area. 315 miles of shoreline on High Rock Lake most of which is privately held. There are public boat ramps and fishing areas on the Davidson and Rowan County sides of the lake.

The only "beach" I can see is at the Flat Swamp Boat Launch on the Rowan County side. Butte Creek landing has a small sandy area, but is primarily a boat launch. It is nothing like the resort the OP is seeking, but the links are here: Salisbury / Spencer / Rowan County Information OnLine ® - Salisbury North Carolina DanTana GoRowan.com Yadkin River High Rock Lake

Yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of something like Smith Mountain Lake. But ya know, we're pretty close to area beaches, so I suppose if one stays in state to find a lake resort, might as well just head to the beach.
