City council passes the city deck for Westin 6-2 to condemn Cone Denim easement. But questions still remain. Rocky Scarfone, owner of the Cone Denim Center said he would sue to temporarily stop the project. However further delays could put the hotel in jeopardy because of opening date agreements with Westin. However it remains to be seen if that will happen because the Westin investors have said they would work with Cone Denim on design adjustments to further accommodate Cone Denim's needs. But there is clear support on council for both decks and associated projects. The discussions between the city and Cone Denim is a work in progress. It's after midnight and city council is still voting on elements of the Westin deck agreements.

“This city is in an economic boom-state,” Abuzuaiter explained. “We are creating more and more economic development than I have ever seen in my 50 years in this city. … This is a very exciting time for Greensboro.”

Very true, greensboro has not had a major boom since the office building boom in the 80's.

Yes they are all included within the decks. But Elm Street will no longer be the only strip downtown with bustling activity. Its an exciting time for downtown and the center city is moving to a new level with the kind of developments we are seeing now. New development leads to more new development. Its like the snowball effect.

Has anybody heard what they are planning for the news and record building or the old dealership downtown?

Im thinking city leaders "hope" to use the News and Record site to try to land Amazon lol. They need to start thinking more realistic and come up with an urban development more realistic.

We'll likely see more interest in the dealership after the performing arts center opens

I wonder if the tower above the deck will be taller than 20 stories. The Rhino times reports than in addition to the hotel and office, Carroll may add residential above that on the top floors. The Aloft will have 150 rooms which means at least 8 stories would be set a side for the hotel. If it were 20 stories that leaves 12 stories. Seems like he would need more than 12 stories to put a sufficient amount of residential in the tower when you factor in the office space.

Carroll's comments:

"When talking about what he planned to build over the parking deck, Carroll said, “It’s going to be something really special. I’ve reached the point in my career where I can do what we call ‘legacy projects.’” He said in January or February, he hoped to be able to announce what the plans were for the building on top of the parking deck."
