Will be in Greensboro in a week. Originally from San Diego but now live in Roanoke. Would LOVE to find a taco shop like back home if there is one! Anybody?! Thanks in advance

I rarely ate Mexican food when I lived in SD, so I can't really compare the Triad to SoCal. I kinda miss Rubio's (lived in SD from 1983 - 1995), however.

I figure there must be some taco-shop type places in the area, but I've never looked for them - we go for sit-down dining.

I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I enjoyed our recent visit to San Luis (on Westchester Dr in High Point - they have 4 in the Triad). Best service I've had at a Mexican joint since moving to NC in 2005. Wife likes Mexican food, so we eat it more than I would otherwise.

Unless you can find someone who has lived in both places and sampled both coasts you won't find it, but here's and idea; venture out and take a chance.
Have you found a place in Roanoke similar to SD? If not why would you think you could find one in Greensboro?

Whelp haven't been to SD but you can hit up Crafted the art of Taco in downtown Greensboro, or you can hit up Spice Cantina also downtown, you can hit up El Camino on Spring Garden, or a few suggestions.

Yeah, I've never had tacos in SD, but if you're looking for something tasty and inventive (moreso than super-authentic Mexican), Crafted is your spot. Tacos like seared rare tuna (with kim chee and garlic aioli), fried fish (with corn and poblano salsa), duck confit (with napa cabbage slaw), etc. Plus make-your-own with corn or flour tortillas and lots of proteins (even vegan).

Thank you everyone for your help...it is quite different and very hard to find outside of San Diego, but occassionally you come across one...I did see some reviews for a Los Cuates in Raleigh, I know, a bit further, that a few reviews compare it to southern Ca food..still searching though, can never have enough

El Milo Taco Taqueria in Asheboro (south of Greensboro) on Hwy. 64 is really tasty and authentic (the menus are completely written in Spanish for their customer base but the staff can translate). Fresh avocados are a staple, for example. It's definitely a change from the typical menu with dozens of "combo" iterations of the same beef tacos with melted cheese, rice, beans, etc. that seem to be the norm around in North Carolina. It has more of a casual order at the counter ambiance than a sit-down restaurant and has a small grocery store (tienda) that's connected off to the side of the restaurant.

A little expensive, but La Azteca might suit your needs near Guilford College (it's on Friendly Ave), especially on the weekends.

Monterrey's on BattleGround.

Great food, inexpensive, friendly staff.

This place has outlasted all the other places on this side of town.

This is a great family oriented mexican place. Their food is fantastic, and as "authentic" as it gets.
