With Center City Park and The new Lebauer Park, a third major downtown park is being envisioned. "Rail Yard Park" would be located in the place of an abandoned railyard in Southside next to CityView Apartments. Plans call for ponds, a pavillion, and recreational amenities. But there is a catch. The railroad company would have to sell the site and they rarely sell their property. If the railroad company doesn't sell the property, a leasing arrangement could be made. Looks like downtown Greensboro is going to have a lot of green public spaces which is important in attracting people and development to the center city. Then there is the 4 mile greenway, the first of its kind in the nation that will encircle downtown Greensboro and include pocket parks. Two legs of the greenway have been completed and a cornerstone in the future northeastern leg is currently under construction.

More on Rail Yard Park. The article is old but the idea is still alive.

That sculpture in Lebauer Park is huge when you are up close to it in person. It's the first time we've really seen something iconic in downtown Greensboro. Greensboro is in the company of some major world class cities having this sculpture and one interesting fact is that it's the largest art installation in the southeast. The pictures I posted show night time shots during light testing but the official lighting will take place Sunday at 8 pm. The sculpture will be taken down during winter months to prevent damage from ice and nasty winter weather. There will be enough programming in the park to keep it packed with people all the time. A lot of great things are happening downtown to attract people. On September 17th a large ferris wheel will be erected for a day near South Elm Street. I would like to see something like that as a permanent fixture in Lebauer Park. Cities such as London and Atlanta have erected permanent ferris wheels in their downtowns. Or at the very least it could be a seasonal attraction. During the holiday months the fountain plaza will be turned into an ice skating rink. During the spring and summer the park could have a ferris wheel. Having different seasonal attractions would help keep the park fresh year round.

Imagine taking a ride on a ferris wheel overlooking Lebauer Park and it's lit sculpture at night in the foreground of Greensboro's skyline.

I was able to get more picture before the park opened. It gets too crowed to really take any good pictures lol. Hopefully ill get a few more good night time shots when they officially light the sculpture tonight.

In addition the street edge of the park has been configured for food trucks.

Winterfest has officially started with its first year in LeBauer Park. The fountain plaza has been converted to a large ice rink and there is also an ice slide.
