Work on the The Carolyn and Maurice LeBauer Park in downtown Greensboro will begin tomorrow morning. The park will be an extension of the future Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts and will also be located across the street from Center City Park. The two parks will in essence create one large park space. LeBauer Park will feature a children's play area, a water feature, a garden, and other gathering spaces. Very cool urban park. I see a fountain in the background and it looks like there is a small little creek along the edge of the park. Earlier concepts showed an art sculpture going over Davie Street from the LeBauer Park to Center-City Park. Hopefully that is still in the plan. The concept also showed that part of Davie Street painted to look like a plaza.

The large aerial sculpture above the seating lawn and stage for LeBauer City Park was designed by internationally renowned Janet Echelman. It will be illuminated with multiple colors at night like her other sculptures in major cities around the U.S. and the world. The sculpture will celebrate Greensboro's textile history. It will be located in the northwest corner of the park near the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. Check her work out online. Also here are some examples and will be similar to the sculpture in LeBauer Park. It will be her first project in North Carolina.

That Echelman will be a neat feature. Her work adds height to an area while remaining ethereal. Also, it bears mentioning that this park and its art installations are all privately funded (by the LeBauers, the Armfield Foundation, and other donors). It will add a lot to downtown GSO.

I'm digging the aerial light sculpture. It will be unique in our state

I think what makes this park different from many urban parks is that it truly will be a family oriented park with interactive water features, children's play areas, a dog park, market plaza, outdoor reading area and a concert stage area. The park will be the heart of the cultural district which will have major cultural destinations on all edges of the park. The lighted aerial sculpture above the lawn will be really cool during the winter when the concert lawn is converted to an out door ice skating rink. A cool thing to watch above you while you are ice skating. Also there will be changes to Davie St so there is a "seamless" transition from LeBauer Park to the performing arts center and Center-City Park. Its going to feel like one large cultural complex.

Other amenities include a unique climbing net for kids, slides built into an earthen berm, restaurant pavilion and areas where guest can play games such as chess and miniature golf. One of the things the community has been wanting is interactive water fountains because you aren't allowed to play in the fountains at Center-City Park. Its a unique urban park for our Greensboro and the state. It will certainly attract some attention.

This just in: Park groundbreaking turns into shovel breaking. It's too damn cold!

Makes sense now, this must be the reason Winterfest moved to the Railyard.

Perhaps Winterfest will boost foot traffic on the south side of the tracks.
