If I'm not mistaken it's pretty flat on the route to DC (I-85 I assume-I just drove to Richmond, VA last week and it was what I would call flat). Doubt you'll find anything like you would on the western side of NC or VA. Just my observations, there might be something out there though.

If I went to Western N.C., would I be going far out of the way if I wanted to turn around and go to D.C.?

Depending on where you are (Raleigh? Cary?) you could be adding 6 hours to your travel time, sorry. You would be better off trying to go snow tubing on another trip when you can head west or northwest (Winterplace in West Virginia would be a good choice not any further away than western NC).

Okay, just checked since you are most likely in Greensboro...travel time to snow tubing near Banner Elk would be just over 2.5 hours - so make that adding 5 hours driving time to your trip.

You might be able to find something up in VA along I-81 if you go that route, that's pretty much all thru the mountains of VA. From WS you would just head up 52 to I-77 into Wytheville, VA to pick up I-81. Oneway from my house it only added about 45 mins to the trip over going I-85/I-95 route. Look for stuff around Blacksburg or Roanoke and see what you find. I don't know of any personally.

Default Thanks!

We are in GSBO. I was thinking to maybe drive 1.5 hours to go tubing from GSBO if possible, and then go the next day to d.c.

Wintergreen Ski Resort in Wintergreen, va would probably be your best bet without going out of you intended travel destination.
Wintergreen Resort - Virginia's Premier Blue Ridge Mountain Vacation Getaway

I dont know which would be quicker driving
I 40 to hwy 52 to I 77 to I 81N
or I 85N to I64
Or straight up on Hwy 29

Good luck and be safe.

Waynesboro Va, I forget the name of the ski resort, but, always has snow and has been around for quite some time. Friendly locals and good prices on rooms.
