No, that HT is not Greensboro's claim to fame. I think the descriptor was used to make a point.

Keep up with what? Charlotte? No thanks.

agreed. Charlotte is a fine city but we don't want to be followers. Greensboro can become a great city without becoming a Charlotte clone.

Was this before or after the parking deck collapsed?

"Spaz" is an acronym for my kids' names, thank you. This person has tried to brag about this HT many other times.

Two Ht's and a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's

The Greensboro zoning board approved the rezoning of the Friendly/Hobbs site for a mixed use development to include high end homes and gourmet grocer plus additional retail space. The gourmet grocer will be either 13,000 or 26,000 square feet. The typical Trader Joes square footage is in the 13,000 square feet range, so we could be looking at the possibility of Trader Joes coming to this site after all. The city council will hear the rezoning request in May.

Also in Friendly Center, a 13,000 square foot retail addition has been approved for the parking lot directly east of Anthropologie and directly west of Whole Foods. So maybe if the the friendly/hobbs site doesn't work out for whatever reason could we see a Trader Joe's locating directly beside Whole Foods??

I know the TJ people understand their demographic, but I don't think they get Greensboro. They could locate anywhere and people would go.

Is there a Fresh Market at Friendly? Saying gourmet grocer sounds more like FM or The Meat House then TJ' s IMO. I'm a UNCG alum who currently lives in Raleigh.

No, though there is one in Jefferson Village and another at Lawndale and Pisgah Church Rd, so two within 3-4 miles. If they added another by Friendly, that'd be a higher concentration of locations than you'd find anywhere else in the state. Winston only has one location and Raleigh has two, plus one in Cary and one in Durham. I don't know if a third makes sense for that part of Greensboro, but I could be wrong.

Not sure what the source was that called it a gourmet grocer, but I'd say that description fits TJ's better than a standard grocery store with the added benefit (for developers) of sounding nice.
