Before the merger I remember it was a big deal to have a Macy's in town. It was in the league of Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor. It turned into a mid tier brand after the merger when all the Hecht's were converted to Macy's, BTW all the Hechts stores use to be Thalheimers. There was one on the lower level at Four Seasons and the Macy's store at Friendly before it was a Hechts use to be Thalheimers. There was also one in downtown Greensboro decades ago. I think it was in the Elm Street Center.

Macy's has always been an upper mid tier brand. But not on the high upper end of Nordstrom or Lord and Taylor. Although their original stores in the Northeast are larger and have a wider selection, including the trendy, popular designers. And they have some large stores in Atlanta and Florida, after acquiring legacy names of Rich's, Davison's, and Burdine's. In the Midwest, they transitioned from Lazarus, and in other areas from Kauffman's. And in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland, they of course took over from Hecht's. With the flagship store recently renovated and remaining in NYC.

When Macy's closes this store, what is likely to take its place? That location is a nice 2 level dept. store building. Perhaps another Belk location, or a even a large Kohl's?

Belk would be a surprise since there is a new location at the Palladium and two locations at Friendly.
Kohl's could be a good fit.
Maybe a two story Kmart.

I remember years ago before the Macy's building was built at the Wendover location overlooking I-40, there was a proposal for a 9-story Crown Plaza Hotel at the site. Too bad that fell through.
