Hi

I am a 58 yo, professional, moving to the Triad from the Boston area, and am wondering which city would be the best fit? I am very active, especially tennis! Any suggestions on a rental property in either area? Thanks!

Diane

They're really very similar. I've lived in both, and I would give a slight edge to W-S, but what other factors are there for you to consider? Job? W-S has a more active downtown entertainment district (although G'boro is making strides)...is that important to you? W-S has more arts and cultural programs. G'boro has a bigger coliseum that pulls in more big name performers. W-S is home of Wake Forest University, so it has college athletics. Are any of these important to you?

I don't play tennis, but both cities have a lot of options on that front. Winston-Salem hosts an annual ATP World Tour event (The Winston-Salem Open), and Greensboro is the HQ of the NC chapter of the USTA.

I don't know off the top of my head what kind of facilities they have in Greensboro, but Winston has decent list of public and private options (Joe White Tennis Center, Miller Park, Westwood Swim and Tennis, Peace Haven Pool and Tennis, Jonestown Swim and Tennis, Leinbach Park, Shaffner Park, Ardmore Park, etc.)

Also in W-S/Forsyth County: Vision Tennis Center (Indoor private club) and Tanglewood Park (county-owned outdoor courts) We used to live in W-S. My husband plays USTA league tennis and was very happy with the available facilities and programs.

Where is your job? If it's in Greensboro, there no need to commute from W-S, and vice-versa. As stated above, there are a lot of similarities between the two cities and both are nice places to live.

And the nice thing about it is the two are close enough together to allow easy travel between the two.

In general, I prefer Winston-Salem. However, Greensboro isn't too different and the Summerfield and Northwest Greensboro areas are just as nice.
