I was wondering if anyone could recommend a blog, magazine, or other resource that would help me get started with a backyard vegetable garden in the Winston-Salem area. I have never tried growing vegetables before but would like to. I'm looking for something that would provide advice about what to plant when, and that sort of thing. Thank you!

Horse manure.

And sand. And air. Pretty much anything you can do to improve the native clay.

The link above is to the extension agency. They can help you get started.

I was a master gardener for the extension agency in Charleston County. Decide what you would like to grow then look on their website. Start small. You'll get overwhelmed with too much.

You will need to amend your soil with compost/organic material. I use peat moss, composted leaves and grass clipping and CURED manure from a local farm. So far, so good.

Garden Web has a great forum with regional boards.
