We are considering relocating from DFW to NC..and thinking the Winston Salem area
Details and "wants"
1. Semi-retired
2. Shooting ranges (skeet/trap/IDPA/USPSA)
3. 1/2 acre + land size
4. Weather? tornados?
5. Quiet area but within 20 minutes to a Starbucks
6. 30 minutes for friendly/dog swimming beach/lake

Suggestions? Or would Raleigh/Durham be a better fit? (may post this there too)

Thanks much!

Tornadoes are rare in most portions of NC:

Winters are generally mild (more winter weather in the mountains), summers are hot and humid (less so in the mountains).
You might want to look at northern Davidson County. Lots of acreage there, could drive into Winston-Salem or High Point for Starbucks. High Rock Lake is nearby. Don't know about shooting ranges. I'd be surprised if there aren't several close by, I'm sure a Google search would reveal that.

What is your price range?

We love it in northeastern Davidson County, in the Meadowlands subdivision just outside the very small town of Wallburg. Though lots here are typically slightly under 1/2 acre, so that might not work for OP. I often wish we had a bit larger lot...until I have to do yard work . I love being close to Winston-Salem (best downtown in NC, IMO) as well as High Point and Greensboro. Meadowlands is EXTREMELY quiet and 15-20 minutes from Starbucks and 15-30 minutes of nearly all of the Triad.

High Rock Lake is about 45 minutes from us, so you'd have to be further south to be within 30 minutes of that area. There may be other suitable lakes, but I'm not familiar with them.

Hunting Creek Preserves is about 45 minutes west of Winston-Salem. I'm not familiar with it or if there are others closer. I've only been to Pro Shots, which is just an indoor shooting range/gun shop/training center.

I love the climate here... certainly a bit cooler than where OP is from, but overall mild. OP will be used to the summers so that's probably not an issue. In a perfect world, I'd be closer to the coast (it's about 4 hours from the Triad), but if we were closer to the beach, we'd be farther to the mountains.

Feel free to look into the High Rock lake area, Exits off I-85 are #81 and #83 also #91. Northern Rowan County and Southern Davidson.

You will find lower prices for land (About $5k/Ac.) and hunting and fishing. There are also lower Real Estate taxes in these areas

I know of a shooting range off Lake Drive (an Am-Vets Post) on Rowan County side.

There's one in Salisbury. (There's also a local place in Salisbury, Koco Java, which makes, in my opinion, a better cup.)

No it isn't. Boss said Southern Davidson/Northern Rowan near High Rock Lake. Plenty of places that fit that description within 20 min of Salisbury.

"Southern Davidson" covers a lot of territory, most of which is more than 20 minutes from Salisbury.

Which is why Boss narrowed it down.
