Anyone know what's going on at the former Newk's restaurant on Hanes Mall Blvd? Saw a couple different construction vans there today. Newk's was my #1 go-to place for lunch and I was of course sad when it closed. Curious what will fill the spot.

Not sure what the restaurant will be, but word is the group that developed Hanestowne Village purchased it and that it will remain a restaurant.

Former tobacco warehouse 836 Oak is going condo in downtown. The developer notes the vibrancy of downtown as the reason to make the change. This is the 2nd new condo project coming online behind Twin City Lofts on 4th St.

8 West Third, the historic former Wachovia Headquarters has been purchased by JDL Castle for conversion into most likely residenitial. They are not yet ready to release details but speculation on WSTB points towards residential.

The latest renderings of Bailey Power Plant shows a new addition on the rear as well as another two phases of construction. No details yet. The news should be covering this in the coming days.

New small grocery store will be coming to the western edge of downtown at 1020 N. Burke St. The article was in the Triad Business Journal but behind their paywall.

Lowe's Foods is very interested in putting a grocery store downtown, according to Alex Lowe in an article in the Sunday W-S Journal. But they're only in an exploratory phase.

I hope they do. There have been a number of chains exploring a downtown grocery store, and as much as I like Publix or Harris Teeter, it'd be nice to see the hometown folks make it happen.
