If they keep up with the rate of residential going up, I dont see a problem. There is a critical mass threshold for a major grocery store chain in downtown areas. I think its like between 8,000 and 10,000 residents. We are going to see a lot of residential go up in the innovation quarter.

Not that I recall (it's already in my recycle bin). I looked on the Journal's website, but I could not find that article to link it.

Doesn't sound like anything will happen any time soon:

"Another potential pro-disruption element by Lowes is that it is considering opening a grocery store in downtown Winston-Salem.

Although Lowe said “we have nothing specific going on for downtown, we are researching the possibilities and would like to be a part of downtown if it makes sense.”

Economists and downtown supporters have said the downtown revitalization initiative will have reached a positive milestone when there is a critical mass of workers and dwellers sufficient to convince a grocery chain to open a store.

Lowe said the company continues to evaluate the number of individuals and households living downtown, as well as the potential disruption of the Business 40 makeover."

Earth Fare or Sprouts are another possibility.

Most people don't realize how much residential needs to be downtown to support a large grocery store. I can see a small grocery store similar to Deep Roots in downtown Greensboro. Major retail chains or large grocery stores don't tend to do very well in downtowns unless there at least 5,000 or 6,000 residents. This explains why Lowes is putting on the breaks a little.

Pedal Pub to soon be operating in downtown Winston-Salem. Pretty cool concept. It's a bar on a trolley.

They're pretty popular in Raleigh. Im assuming it'll work the same way in that not only do you drink and pedal around the city, but you also hit a lot of the good local spots for a drink or two.

Trolley Pub Winston-Salem - Trolley Pub, a Pedal-powered, Pub-crawling Trolley

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Trolley Pub Winston-Salem Opening?
Bookings will be accepted beginning May 14th and our grand opening will be May 25th.

What is the Trolley Pub?
It’s a 14-person pedal powered trolley on wheels, with a certified Trolley Pub conductor in the captain’s seat. Perfect for pub crawls, birthday celebrations, bachelor/bachelorette parties, company outings, brewery tours, sightseeing, themed nights out- the possibilities are endless! A minimum of 6 peddlers are necessary to power the Trolley Pub.

What all is included in the price?
The rental of the Trolley Pub for 2 hours and your Driver.

Where does the Trolley Pub stop and for how long?
During a private tour, that is up to you, as long as its along your route. Visit the "destinations" page under "about" for details. Just let your driver know where you would like to stop at the start of the tour. Most groups stop at three spots for about 15-20 minutes at each stop. For mixer tours, we will stop at three popular bar/restaurants for 15 minutes at each stop. These stops will vary based on the group on board, rider requests, and the driver's discretion.

How much does it cost?
A private tour has a flat rate of $425. Mixer tickets, where you can buy individual seats, are $37 each. Special events are charged by the hour- plus a drop-off fee if you need to have it transported to your event. Make sure you book your tour well in advance, as we are often sold out on popular time-slots up to a month in advance!

Where do we board the Trolley Pub?
TBD

Can we drink on board?
Yes, just no glass or liquor please.

Isn’t it hard to pedal?
It's not too bad!. Plus, we have an auxiliary motor to help along the difficult spots. We have had groups of all 70+ seniors pedal just fine. If they can do it, you can do it!!!

What if it rains?
Trolley Pub operates rain or shine! If it's going to rain, we recommend bringing rain jackets and/or ponchos. It’s still a lot of fun- think of it as an adventure. We only cancel tours if there are unsafe conditions.

How many coolers fit on board?
We can fit approximately 3 full-sized coolers on board. If you would like to use our cooler, we have room for approximately 48 cans in ours (but we recommend you pack your own ahead of time). Remember to bring ice!!

Can more than 14 people fit on the Trolley Pub?
No. The fourteen seats include the non-pedaling seat in the back bench.

Are people under the age of 21 allowed on board?
Yes. Riders under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present. The minimum age to ride the Trolley Pub is 15 with valid i/d and parent/gurdian.

Is there a weight limit for riders?
Yes. Unfortunately due to the nature of the vehicles, customers over 275 pounds will not be able to comfortably ride the Trolley Pub. This rule applies to the pedaling seats. Riders above 275 may sit on bench seats.

How do I reschedule/cancel my tour?
It's easy! Simply respond to your confirmation email with the date change/cancellation request. Please ensure that you are within the reschedule/cancellation time frame outlined in your confirmation email and the terms/conditions agreed to prior to booking.
