For recommendations around Mooresville, you might check out the Charlotte subforum. Closer to Burlington, I have friends who live in Mebane and like it a lot.

Couple points...Burlington is "upwind" from Sharon-Harris Nuclear Power Plant, and a pretty good distance at that.

There are plenty of areas with good schools, not far from Burlington. I live in Guilford, so I cannot really comment on Alamance county. But in Guilford (Greensboro), Northwest and Northern are very good. Southeast might also be a good choice. It's not a bad commute from Nothern Guilford county, or Southeast Guilford (even closer) to Burlington.

The small towns in Rockingham county might be nice to live in, but the schools are not at the same level as the bigger metropolitan area. In general Rockingham county has been struggling economically for years. However, it is very affordable.

Understand also, that NC has charter schools, so don't forget to check them out also.

Some of these towns you mention might be a huge culture shock coming from Mass. And a drive from Stokesdale to Mooresville is probably 2 hours when you factor in rush hour traffic around Greensboro.

Do you know yet where exactly your husband will be working? In either case, there is absolutely no reason for him to commute more than 20-25 miles, if that far. There are plenty of great neighborhoods and safe locations close to both cities. Stokesdale is much further than you need to be for either city.

Burlington but he only has to work there till he finds something closer . I really like the country. I visited a few towns and talked with the locals and stokesdale is close to Greensboro and a lot of little towns . Only thing that seemed different was that people were nicer than in mass.
