For a three year run (2015, 2016 and 2017) Greensboro will be hosting the National Folk Festival which is expected to attract up to 150,000 people from around the country and region. Greensboro is sprucing up its downtown for the festival including painting crosswalks to look like railroad tracks symbolizing Greensboro as the Gate City. Its a three day event starting September 11, 2015 with this year celebrating the 75th anniversary of the National Folk Festival.

It's kind of a shame the city waits until an event such as this to spruce things up. Kind of says "f**k you" to those that live here and pay the taxes.
High Point has the same snotty ass attitude towards it's people, but when the market comes to town.

I don't see it that way. They've been doing a lot to spruce up the city anyway, and want to make sure that the city shows well to potential first-time visitors (or people who haven't been to GSO in a while).

What about the first time visitors before this event?

I think they've been getting a better and better experience with each passing year. It's not as if downtown improvements began with this event, and they won't end with it either. But an event like this is an opportunity to draw in quite a few new folks in one swoop, so it's only logical to ramp up the sprucing. But it's all part of a larger trend, no?

I hope so, but I couldn't help but notice the grey light poles and faded faux crosswalks just a few blocks away from Elm. I hope those are on the "to be done list."

yep they have already painted many of them throughout downtown green and added LED light fixtures. Hopefully they'll all be painted before the folk festival. I have also noticed that they have put up more "Welcome to Downtown Greensboro" signs. I would like the city to put up a sign at the performing arts center site that says "Future home of the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts" so that visitors know whats coming.

Wow they must have done that within the past day. Once the design is revealed to the public I'm sure they will put up an illustration as well.
