we are moving from Massachusetts to stokesdale and I'm not sure how worried I should be about letting my children play outside when there are poisonous snakes and spiders. How concerned should I be ? In mass I hardly ever see a snake but I know we have them .

I am 55 years old, have lived in NC almost all that time, and spent a lot of time outside. I have seen one poisonous snake, and no poisonous spiders (that I know of). I think if you use common sense and take simple precautions, you'll be fine.

Same here. I played in the woods and creeks during my childhood, never once saw a snake. Snakes eat vermin. Spiders eat mosquitoes.

Agreed. You just have to be smart about things. Be careful around creek, stream, and river banks, and be careful near woodpiles - these are areas that snakes and spiders like to frequent. Keep the grass mowed. Wear shoes - if you walk out after dark to cover your grill, avoid flip flops and bare feet.

This is what you need to be really careful about.

Meet Mr. Copper-Dopper, AKA, Copperhead. Not everywhere, but just about. Kind of hard to see.

If your kids are outside a lot...they will see copperheads. They are not an aggressive snake, and their venom is not the worse kind. Don't worry about spiders...but the yellow jackets are a threat in late summer early fall...

NC is a great place for kids to play outside. The weather is good year round.
