I haven't seen a thread on this yet but the news-record website is stating that High Point rd/Lee St will officially change name to Gate City Blvd. There are going to be some streetcaping plans to be done over the summer.

Looks like they're laying sidewalk on the disconnected portions.

From what I've seen in other cities, changing the name of a street rarely does anything at all for it's perception. It will take a lot more than a name change to bring back High Point Road, so I hope they have some MAJOR streetscape plans and other ideas for this stretch of road.

The name change is a start. Plus many don't like the idea of one of Greensboro's gateway roads being called "High Point" Rd. The perception of Lee Street should change pretty quickly. UNCG has bought a lot of land along that corridor and it's becoming an urban college strip.

Looks like the transitioning has already begun. They have already started changing the street signs to Gate City Blvd. along the corridor.

I guess my biggest beef is the fact the road has two names; for that I support changing the name. As for the rest I don't see the big deal. MLK and E Market St are turds the city attempted to polish by planting pretty light poles, faux brick crosswalks, and connecting sidewalks. Yet the streets are lined by run down structures of all types. High Point Rd is a jewel compared to those two and if the city want to improve the image they will be forced to mettle in real estate.
High Point did the same thing to Kivett Dr; a yellow brick road lined with outhouses.

They should start by removing some lane and making it more pedestrian friendly. The intersections are way too wide which makes it hard to cross before the light changes. I have always like the Lee Street end better - more historic buildings and less lanes to deal with, and UNC-G has made it's presence know on that end.

Wonder what's taking so long for them to switch over the Lee Street signs on the interstates to Gate City Blvd? It confuses travelers. It's been almost 3 months and the exit signs still say Lee Street.
