I am a Wake Forest alum who has just accepted a job back in Winston after I complete my grad degree in May 2016. Living in the WFU "bubble" as a student, I am not very familiar with some of the best places to look for rentals.
A little bit about me and what I'm looking for:
-I am looking of a nice condo/apt/townhouse to rent for ideally under $1000/mo
-I am working downtown in the Innovation Quarter and would like to keep my commute to 15-20 minutes (30 max)
-I'm more of a "country mouse" so a flat downtown wouldn't appeal to me. I'm looking for a more suburban or rural feeling community a little bit outside of town.
-I'm young (22) but I DO NOT want to live anywhere that is popular among WFU students...been there done that
-As a single person, I am not (yet) concerned about school districts or family friendliness. I'm just looking for a quiet, safe neighborhood with some open space and some good people.
Thanks in advance! I know people post lots of questions like this so I appreciate you considering my specific circumstances.
I have no idea if rentals in your price range are available but I used to live near Old Salem (Brookstown x S.Marshall area). Even though it's close to downtown, with the Strollway and all the green space in and around Old Salem, it might meet your criteria. Also close to the YWCA which is a great facility. Yes, there are lofts in that area which I know do not meet your criteria, but also more traditional townhomes and condos too. If I were moving back to W-S, I would give anything to live in that area again.
Clemmons, Pfafftown, Vienna...most all areas to the west and northwest of W-S meet your criteria. Just be aware that a section of B-40 is going to close next year for 2 years in order to rebuild it. Where ever you live, make sure you can identify an alternate route (or routes) into downtown.

One reason I suggested the Southeast Gateway area near Old Salem instead of a more suburban location.
