The churches that seem less segragated are usually the Pentecostal ones. I have been to quite a few churches in the Triad, and usually the smaller the number of members, the more segregated. Some churches therefore do "sister churches." We went to a small rural church with no black members, but had a small sister church with no white members. We got together for fellowships and such. The larger churches seem to be much more diverse.

Oh wow, terry lynn I apologize for the unwelcome reception you received from the people here. I assure you that most people you will meet in N.C. will be completely opposite! People, can you allow someone to ask a legitimate relocation question without attracting the attention of Aryan Nation? There are threads for your racism and hatred. This isn't one of them.

In response to the original question, you may not be aware that Greensboro/Guilford County and the Triad is not far behind Raleigh/The Triangle in population, although Raleigh is growing faster and will eventually move further in front. Greensboro does have a sort of smaller city feel, I think mainly from the short skyline and compact (but really beautiful) downtown area. Any of the major cities in N.C. are racially mixed and I've noticed that there don't seem to be as many segregated black communities as you would find in Atlanta. I HAVE seen some almost totally white communities (Clemmons 94% white???) but, having grown up in Clemmons it isn't due to racism and it's not forced segregation where a person of color would be uncomfortable living there.

Even though there is much talk of Charlotte or Atlanta as 'the place to be' if you're black and successful, I think the Triad or the Triangle are also good choices with great neighborhoods that will fit your needs.

I will be down later in the year. I have a family friend who lives in High Point. She use to live in Greensboro near the airport. I'll have her drive me around and show me the area. From what I understand, zip code 27410 is a nice safe area. Really anything on the NW side of Greensboro. Good luck with your move.

We also have NC A&T State University, as well as a few other colleges.

I would expect there to be plenty of black professionals here. I've known a man (now probably in his 40s) who's an architect and is single (divorced with kids) for several years now. He goes to my church. There are several other good men and women in my church as well. Most of them are married though.

(I mention the folks in my church because we have about 50-55% whites, 40-45% blacks, 5% Hispanics. If I had to guess on percentages. )

My family and I live in a pre-dominantly black neighborhood. It's a good neighborhood with good people.

So, as I said, I would expect there to be plenty of black professionals in Greensboro. Good, decent, hard-working people.

All the best in your decision and I hope you enjoy your visit here.

I would really appreciate some feed back, especially from the african american community. I visited Raleigh this past June....beautiful area, very clean and nice people. But I don't want another Big city to live in. My next trip will be to Greensboro.
Terry Lynn. I think you will definitely find folks your age here in GSO. Go to one HBCU football game in NC, cruise thru the tailgating section and you're in. ;-)

My husabd is a College Professor and we will be moving to the Winston Salem area by 8/1/09. We plan to rent while we learn the "lay of the land". We are looking for a 3BDR apartment. Assigned parking would be good because of health issues. Very, very nice area is wanted. First floor and no thin walls. Is there a company in the area that can assist us in our search.
