The friendliness and helpfulness of the people blew me away. However, the walkable lifestyle just doesn't seem very realistic

It certainly would be possible to live a "car-light" lifestyle in Winston-Salem, but car-free would be hard. Good luck as you continue your search.

Yeah, as I said earlier in this thread, W-S is one of the worst cities in the world in terms of walkability! Unfortunately, most other Southern cities (except for really large ones and ones with large historic districts) are also like W-S in terms of feasibility. At least Southern hospitality is real

In a 500-way tie with every other city in the southeast, the southwest, the Great Plains, much of the midwest and much of the northeast.

Sorry Winston wasn't quite what you were looking for, OP. Walkability is definitely something that many in the city are working on, and hopefully it will continue to improve. We do have a long way to go, though.
