Hello,

Because I am thinking about moving to Winston Salem I am wondering how allergy sufferers fare there?

I had very bad allergies as a child, I had allergy shots for years to even get to a point where I didn't have to live in a plastic bubble As an adult I traveled a lot for work and noticed many cities where I was fine, and others where my allergies were really bad.

I currently live in a place where my allergies are so much better I don't even think about them much anymore, but realized that I have to make sure that I don't move to a place where I will be suffering a lot. I don't want to have to get weekly shots etc. just to have decent quality of life.

So does anyone on this forum have allergies (or family members who do) and what is your experience with allergies in Winston Salem?

I had really bad allergies in Winston until I started to use the QNasl spray (prescription-only). NC is known to be a bad allergy state.

Well my allergies are more than the seasonal hay fever other people have, though of course pollen, weeds, etc. are one part of it. I am also allergic to mold, animal hair, etc.

Curious if North Carolina, and Winston Salem in particular, has something in particular that people with allergies react to? Every place has vegetation, but maybe there is a specific type of tree or plant that is prodigious there?

Sorry to hear about your allergies. Winston-Salem certainly has plenty of trees, grasses, and weeds that generate pollen. For a few weeks in Spring, virtually everything is coated in yellow so you will likely be miserable during this time. Here's a link to the daily pollen report for Forsyth County (note that the pollen reports are suspended during the winter months):

Pine, oak and hickory are the worst offenders in the spring. Ragweed in the fall is bad.

I was born and raised in NC and suffered with seasonal allergies all my life. I started using local honey in my tea every day and have nothing anymore. Unbelievable.

I've heard that from a lot of people. There must be something to it.
