I have an international flight leaving from Charlotte airport at 9:30 am during the week, which means i need to get to airport about 7:30, so i'm curious about the traffic headed south on I-77 by lake versus traffic headed south on I-85 coming in from Salisbury/Kannapolis on in?

Basically, should I take I-40/I-77 or Hwy52/I-85 to get to the airport from Winston-Salem? Either of those routes is no more than a mile difference from where i live in Winston-Salem. I know the lake area gets backed up pretty badly from past experience...though that was a mainly from a year or more ago. Has it changed...is it better or worse? Is I-85 just as bad or better?

No good answer to this, I'm afraid. Both highways get ridiculously congested in the mornings--I-77 near the lake at Davidson (as you noted), and I-85 at China Grove where it narrows from 3 to 2 lanes. And of course, both highways are subject to potential accidents. Your best bet is to leave very early. I would suggest taking the I-77 route, and plan to be at Davidson no later than 6:30 (that means leaving W-S by 5:30 at the latest).

Good luck!

I looked at both google and apple maps this morning between 6:30 and 6:45 and it only showed red on I-77. I-85 appeared to be clear. Can anyone let me know how the traffic is on 85 from Salisbury south to Charlotte around that time?

^ You mention China Grove gets backed up...approximately what time does that happen and how bad is it? Also, are there routine back ups anywhere else south of there?

I40 to I77 is by far the best choice IMO. I've done both many times, and the 40/77 route doesn't have the huge truck traffic of I85 - that's enough of a difference for me. Both will be bumper-to-bumper, so leave early whichever you choose.

I would probably change my flight (if possible) or stay at a hotel the night before (if affordable). Good luck.
