My wife and I plan on moving to the Piedmont area this or next year. We currently live on 40 acres outside Reno, NV and will be looking for a few acres within about a 30-45 minute drive of W-S or Greensboro.
So far, I have found a few places that tend to be in the 16 acre range and under $175K for land and a manufactured house. Does anyone have any recommendations on nice quiet rural areas with a good water supply known to be in the area?
Anyplace from Pilot to Asheboro, and Yadkinville to Burlington seems about right for the radius of our search zone. The biggest thing is good water, and then trees and very good drainage. I also hope to find a wooded hill with about a 150' elevation. Geothermal or NG onsite would be nice, but a long shot!
Are there common problems with perc tests, wells, seismic activity, or soils compaction in the general areas? How about hazardous wastes activities?
How are the laws concerning water and mineral rights under private property? Or has anyone asked? Has anyone on here built their own home? Can you tell me about the rules/fees of doing such a thing in the area?
Good or bad school districts and crime issues? How are taxes in those different areas/counties? How about good ole boy politics and law enforcement?
