This is 2016, and while there's racism EVERYWHERE... and most of it takes the form of economic racism... your biggest issue will be adjusting to the culture down here.

YES ... of course... there's racism...(just find yourself driving into the wrong small town)... but these people have been living together for centuries. They know each others grandparents. They grow up together. BUT... the curse of racism is a stake still deeply embedded in the Southern Heart. (There are reasons why they don't want to let go of that bloody flag....)

This means... your biggest issues will be dealing with:
  1. The karma ... the fallout... the legacy of slavery
  2. The INTERNALIZED oppression that slavery caused
  3. The resentments and jealousies that linger
You wrote that you're a "person of color."
WHAT COLOR ARE YOU? It truly, truly makes a difference.

If you're Asian... no problem. You're not in the history and as long as you do your job and deal with your friends and avoid engaging in conversations with some of the more... "challenged" blacks, whites, and other homegrown people here, you'll be fine.

The BIGGEST issue is the culture of moving from a real urban enviornment to ... North Carolina.... which remains ... "rural" in its culture. Raleigh, Cary... those kinds of places are on their way to change... but the South LOVES GOSSIP.

"They want to know about you.... not you."

Don't be fooled by the smiles. They want to keep their family and personal business private... but they want to gossip about you because the goal is to feel BETTER than you ..the outsider. Lies, slander? Don't matter. They just want their pound of flesh to gossip over ... after church.

Big Mamma-ism Vs. The Patriarchy
The gender war is hot down here. There's a form of Feminism that is attached to the illusion of power... being Gate Keepers and Heralds of who is lovable and worthy and who isn't is also a huge part of the DRAMA down here. (I strongly advise a brief look over of Jung's Depth Psychology around the emotionalism of women when it's attached to, "Will To Power" Vs. the heart.)

Economic oppression of women continues.
You're entering a long legacy of history that have created dysfunctional families.
Many have a RIGHT to be angry.
The Klan is still very much alive and well. The CONFEDERACY never died down here, so it's alive and well too. There are other "secrete" societies too. Masons... etc.. Unfortunately... Southern politics and business dealings still feel they can't survive without corruption... but hey... this is America...

And disregard that stuff about all the colleges and university. I've NEVER seen so many ill-informed college students in my life. Why? Cliques. When they only want to talk to each other... ABOUT YOU... rather than to you... they're only going to keep getting the same lame and incomplete views of the world.

SEX and POWER
Everything ... revolves around those two. If you're black.. BRING YOUR WIFE. You'll avoid a lot of drama if you do. There's like this ... arrogance like you're "SUPPOSED" to do this or that for people you don't even know and most of whom you don't wish to.

Shame is a big issue so... alcoholism, drug addiction, and mental illness looms (silently) LARGE.
The other side of that coin is emotional and psychological "Codependency" ... the grasping of some who want to use others as their "drug". (More drama.) There's are "rules" they want YOU to live by... but they don't. Main one is: "You're SUPPOSED to be nice."

Don't fall for it. There's a lot of compassion ... yes. But beneath the surface? People are not nice .. so you be you and keep your fences up because you can bet theirs are up.

BAD BOUNDARIES
This goes back to the Urban Vs. Rural culture.
There are ... very few ... boundaries that people will respect. It's the South. You have to show them where the boundaries are. And don't try to change them. Won't work. JESUS has been trying for centuries and apparently he's had little success.

If you're Hispanic...
There are plenty of your people here.

If you're black... well ... ((chuckle)) ... dig this...
North Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in the U.S. You can rent or buy cheaper than in most places. There are tons of "Northerners" (people who come from anywhere but the Carolinas or ... Georgia) continuing to move here. It will take you a minute, but you will find your tribe.

You may have to recreate what you need to enjoy a quality of life here... but you can do it. Just be prepared to ignore what most folks say, and look for those with TRULY good hearts and those who have similar interest. Durham is changing. Forget about what Greensboro is doing. It's controlled by old Southern money. Nobody is going to physically hurt you.

Offer whatever talents you have to those who want to accept it... and forget all the idiots who are threatened and jealous just because you look different or have out-of-state plates. Find out how this experience will help you grow and change and become more "you."

I know it's important for you to insult people you don't know. But please: explain what lies you mean. And explain your version of karma.

I'm sorry you're having such a rough time feeling comfortable. I'm just not sure it's the fault of all of the population of Greensboro.

Lets see...a vegan diet contains no animal products. This could reasonably result in vitamin B12 deficiency, since B12 comes from meat and dairy products, which of course, aren't vegan. Hmm, what are the symptoms of B12 deficiency?:

"Psychological problems such as dementia, paranoia, depression, and behavioral problems can result from a vitamin B12 deficiency. Neurological damage sometimes cannot be reversed."

Things are starting to make sense!

That scene in A Beautiful Mind where they walk in the room and there's papers taped to all the walls?

Default ((chuckle))

Me thinks they doth protest too much!

"Nope. No racism down heah in da South. Nope.... well... only the "normal" kind....

As I said... you're biggest issues "as a person of color" won't be racism, it will be adapting to the culture here. It's -- different ---here.... and the historic tethers to its past naturally make it so.

It's nothing like there's signs here telling you which entrance to take... and you can date and love whomever you want... it's the container the culture sits in.

Proof? ((chuckle)) Look no further than their politics.
How do you honestly ... with any good conscious.. VOTE your own public school system backwards to being listed as being the worst in the nation for teachers??? How do you do that? WHY would you want to do that ... other than for the purpose of maintaining the status quo?
(Here's a link about teacher turn over being even WORSE than previously reported: North Carolina Politics

Tea Party?
Republicans?
North Carolina (and the South) is CONSERVATIVE.
The idea of change in the Piedmont Triad is not looked upon as kindly as it is in the Triangle.
Today, nationwide, there are even REPUBLICANS who complain about the racism within the Republican party... so get used to the concept of "black" Republicans who will get angry should a discussion about the brainwashing influence of the six corporations that own all the media come up at the gym.

Here's the opening paragraph from the (propaganda rag) New York Times:
"SILER CITY, N.C. In Raleigh, conservative Republicans may be running North Carolina like they own it, but go almost anyplace in the state, even to this former textile town that looks like a movie-set re-creation of an older, more traditional South, and the political picture quickly blurs."

I'm trying to prepare you for a balanced view of what you'll get when you're here. It's the "blur" that will have you scratching your head for the first couple of years you're here. North Carolina is in "flux" .. and that's good thing. The farming and rural culture that predominates the values and perceptions is changing. It's reported that last year, Durham experienced somewhere between 60,000 and 80,000 new "transplants" moving in from out of state. That's huge. As a result there are world class artistic events going on. Walk the small downtown any night (In DURHAM) and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the sophisticated restaurants popping up.

There ARE some wonderful people here... but the CONTAINER the state sits in is visibly is showing the psychological stresses of transition from rural "Keep your family business at home" to, open, dynamic, healthier, more urban culture. Discussing things like religion and it's deeper allegorical significance is not viewed kindly.

A story a young brother told me about Carrboro should shed some light:
"When they built Duke, they initially brought down professors from Princeton. Those professors didn't want to be associated with lynching, so when they saw a black man going around with a white woman, they got with the "right" black people in the community and told them to run him off... and they did. And to some extent, they're still doing it.

Again ... it's not the racism that will be your biggest hurdle. It's the historic conditioning of the people... and if you're African American... you're in for a SHOCK from the ... thinking... that a fair segment of blacks here exhibit. It's more like a ... jealous resentment lurking just beneath the surface.

MOST alarming is this "not-so-new" version of Feminism that many black women embrace. It's not really "new" ... because a trip to any of the well maintained slave plantations here in the South "Mammy" was the first... House "Negro". These ... figures have almost become archetypes in our collective social psychology that illustrate when the "body-politic" is out of balance and crying out for help. The hostility they show towards black men in deference to whites is pathetically funny-- but troubling for them. Truly absurd and almost symptomatic of the anger and rage of a histrionic Borderline patient. Namely, if you don't kiss her butt, she'll run get Massa or Miss Ann on you.

Again... Sex and Power ... the yearning for them... amongst powerless and dysfunctional people who often don't even know the common names of popular social theorist like Buckminster Fuller, Noam Chomsky, or psychologist like Sigmund Freud or Carl Jung.

It's not like this is some evil place... but it IS a place filled with closed cliques of people with "realities" very different from those of other cliques. In this Conservative atmosphere, there is a resistance for these divergent "cliques" to honestly or deeply engage with "the others." So you have these weird... window-tinted, nosy, gossiping people living in a "Culture of voyeurism" ... and denying the pleasure they derive from it. This goes on beside people who just don't have time or mindscape to even notice.

As a man of color... the tip of the spear... both in positive and negative ways... you WILL experience the weirdness of this region in flux ... so prepare for it. Blond haired men from Los Angeles get twisted up by it when some of them first relocate. Just know that there's a lot of "stuff" beneath those surface smiles.

Bottom line: privilege exist and people want to align themselves with as much of it as they can. The more Narcissistic they are... studies show... the more they're likely to seek to become a part of the group that will provide them with "privilege."

Human nature... or human dysfunction?

^ Wow. Your post is so full of generalities and half-truths that it hardly warrants a response. But I do feel compelled to address this comment:

First, you apparently don't realize that Duke is in Durham, not Carrboro. What does this story have to do with Carrboro? Second, Duke's Durham campus opened in 1892. 1892! If this story is true, it's indicative of racial issues of that time that existed not only in the South, but in other parts of the country as well. The North has a well-documented history of post-Civil War segregation and racial discrimination. Whatever light this story may shed on the South shines just as brightly on the rest of the country.

So what is your point?
