Today's snow showers are just a tease for what is increasingly looking like a major winter storm for the Triad this weekend. There could be several inches of snow topped by a serious ice storm. As usual, grocery and hardware stores are seeing brisk business. Prepare now.

…winter storm watch in effect from late thursday night through
saturday afternoon…
the national weather service in raleigh has issued a winter storm
watch…which is in effect from late thursday night through
saturday afternoon.
* locations…areas most affected by snow through early this
evening will include winston-salem… greensboro…
lexington… high point… randleman… altamahaw…
burlington… and roxboro.
* hazard types…a short period of light snow later today through
mid evening is expected to accumulate on roads and sideways…
causing slippery conditions through at least mid evening.
Then… a significant wintry mix of snow… sleet… and
freezing rain is expected thursday night through saturday.
* accumulations…snow accumulations through this evening will
range from a dusting to just under one inch. Then… for
thursday night through saturday… total snow accumulation of 4
to 8 inches… and potentially near 12 inches around winston-
salem…along with ice accumulations of one quarter to one half
inch… are possible.
* timing…a period of snow is expected late afternoon through
early evening. Then… with the next storm system… wintry
precipitation is expected to move in from the southwest late
thursday evening or shortly after midnight… and will persist
through much of saturday.
* impacts…roads are expected to be slippery through at least mid
evening. There is a threat of black ice lingering into thursday
morning as well. Finally… major impacts are likely thursday
night into saturday… including dangerous travel conditions and
power outages.
* winds…from the northeast 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20
mph.
* temperatures…lows tonight will be in the 20s. Temperatures
will remain near or below freezing from thursday night through
saturday.
Precautionary/preparedness actions…
a winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities…and use caution while
driving.
A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant
snow…sleet…or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

Multiple vehicles upside down and road closures already in northwest NC. National Weather Service reportingly rapidly deteriorating road conditions in the Triad.
Is that a little SUV? Just a reminder for all that 4-wheel-drive doesn't mean 4-wheel-stop. Manage your speed, anticipate stops, and lay off the sudden braking. The average driver relies way too much on their brakes and follows way too closely, and that's dangerous in the best of driving conditions. The secondary roads weren't great this morning, and promise to be very treacherous in the days to come.
Certainly the potential for ice is the greatest concern. With the forecast high for Friday to be below freezing in the Triad, the all-snow model seems likely. It might not get above freezing Saturday either. But Sunday temps in the 40s with sun could melt quite a bit of snow, which could freeze Sunday night...Monday morning might be nasty.
