Aloha everyone! I hope you're all safe and warm from the snow.

My fiancé has been accepted to the Wake Forest medical school and we will be relocating soon. We are looking to move in April or May to give us time to settle in. We are shipping a car and hoping to live near the school.
Any advice or tips on living downtown or in the surrounding areas would be kindly appreciated.

Thank you!

Aloha! What is your budget? Good neighborhoods to check out are Downtown proper, West End (very close to the hospital), and Ardmore (the hospital is in the Ardmore area and a lot of hospital staff and medical students live there). The hospital is not very far from downtown.

I'm not 100% sure of the current timeline, but I think that the medical school's relocation to the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter was supposed to happen this summer. So while Ardmore and West End are still good options, a place downtown would be even closer to the new facility, though it will likely be a bit more expensive.

Just the two of you, Mrs. Pond? If schools are a concern, that changes things slightly, and some of the nice loft spaces downtown might have pet restrictions.

Thank you for the responses! Just the two of us in our late 20's with a budget cap of $1200 a month(inc utilities) so schools aren't a problem. We are considering purchasing a home and additional car after a year or so.

UnderTheLiveOaks, I believe you are correct and it is in my understanding the medical classes will be on Vine st.

Is downtown a pretty convenient place to live? Granted I am used to Oahu city living, I am a bit spoiled having a 24 hour grocery across the street. Are things within walking distance such as grocery, yoga, casual shopping? I'm quite nervous but excited for the move, is making friends difficult? I'm a local girl from Oahu(mixed Asian) and once out of college I know it gets hard to meet new people.

Thanks y'all for the time and all the questions!

It's mostly only a problem in areas you wouldn't want to be in anyway. We used to live near Old Salem (south of downtown) and experienced a couple of auto break-ins over a 10 year period.... nothing any worse. Even the highest end neighborhoods experience that sort of vandalism once in awhile.

There are a couple of small grocery stores in Downtown and major grocery stores (not open 24 hours) about 1.5-2 miles away from downtown (35 min walk or 5-10 minute drive).
