I am interested in a house between Silas Creek and Cavalier Dr. NW which is west of W-S. Would this be a safe enough area for a senior woman to live alone in?

Also, is it true there are no grocery delivery services in W-S?

How long of a drive to get to the mountains and where would that put me?

I am very interested in W-S because I have heard it is a small city very big on the arts. Also wondering if there are resources or places where I can hook up with people interested in traditional mountain music...jams, venues, etc.

Last but certainly not least, I am very interested in keeping my mind active so I would be looking for continuing, credit-free, adult education programs. Thank you in advance.

In general, that is a safe area of W-S.

The mountains are anywhere from about an hour away (the Galax, Va area) to an hour and half (Boone, NC) to about 2 hours (Asheville, NC).

Here's an acoustic music jam group on Meetup: Winston Acoustic Jam Sessions (Winston Salem, NC) - Meetup

The Blue Ridge Music Center in Galax is a great resource for traditional music: Blue Ridge Music Center

Forsyth Technical Community College has many continuing ed and personal enrichment courses:

All great info, Coastal Planner.

You're right on when it comes to the mountains. I'd only add that in about half an hour from that general area (Cavalier Drive), you could be at Pilot Mountain, which isn't THE mountains, per se, as it rises above its surroundings, but it is A mountain, complete with hiking trails and great views. Hanging Rock is also about 45 minutes away, and the mountains west of Elkin (Roaring Gap, Stone Mountain State Park, etc.) are around an hour away. And depending on what you're used to, geography wise, you might feel like you're in the mountains sooner. There are some areas of the Foothills with nice twisty roads and trails that feel somewhat mountainous and are quite close to town.

On the bluegrass/folk front, there's a great calendar here that lists upcoming shows all over NC (and close-in parts of VA): https://nccoffeeshopmusic.wordpress....ance-schedule/ In addition to the shows in Winston, there are lots listed in towns that are within an hour's drive: Mt. Airy; Eden; Wilkesboro (home of Merlefest); Cana, VA; Galax; etc.

Also, you asked about grocery delivery. Peapod, Amazon Fresh, etc. aren't available in Winston-Salem, but at least two grocery stores (Lowes Foods and Harris Teeter) do have delivery services available. I don't know exactly where they deliver and what the fees are, but you can get groceries delivered in at least some parts of Winston. Here's the link to Harris Teeter's service: https://shop.harristeeter.com/store/3866218#/ and here's the one to Lowes Foods: https://shop.lowesfoods.com/#/

And regarding continuing education, in addition to the excellent Forsyth Tech opportunities Coastal Planner mentioned, if you happen to be looking for classes in art, photography, woodworking, fabric arts, digital design, glassworking, metal working, or other visual arts, there's a great place called the Sawtooth Center downtown. They offer lots of classes. http://www.sawtooth.org/classes/

Actually, Lowe's To Go is not a delivery service, at least my local store is not. They don't seem to have an explanation on their website, but it's an online ordering service where someone picks and packs what you order. You have to go to the store to pick it up, but they have designated parking and bring it out to your car for you.

Some Lowe's stores do offer delivery service. When my MIL in Greensboro had a stroke, we looked into getting grocery delivery for her, and a few, but not all, of the Lowe's stores offered it.

If you can't find a grocery store that delivers you might be able to find a delivery service that will.

Right. That's a service they offer at most of the stores. But at some stores, they'll also deliver. I've never done it myself, but it's listed as an option on the website. Same goes for HT.

The west side of Winston-Salem is about the safest there is...you would have little chance of being a victim in that area as long as you stay away from drugs/gangs/domestic violence. Welcome to Winston-Salem!

I am bummed Joe Tarheel! The house I had my eye on is now Pending! BUT, I am most definitely keeping a sharp eye out for more of the same as I am liking the vibes I get on W-S!
