I did that when they opened the new part of 73 that connects to 220. It took Google Maps over a month to have it show up. It shows up on Waze pretty fast. Even the Weather Channel's maps had it before Google did.
This new section isn't on Waze yet (it's on there but says the road is closed) but I bet it will be in the next couple days.
Apple Maps still doesn't have the section of I-73 from Bryan Boulevard to 220. It's kind of a blast seeing your GPS fly through "uncharted territory" with Apple Carplay while driving that stretch. Even worse: Apple Maps still has the closed off section of Bryan Boulevard from the airport to 68 as "open". I'm not sure how many people have been royally screwed up with their directions.
I drove on the new section today. Its certainly faster to get to I-85 than taking Hwy 29 through the city. They are currently building an interchange at Hwy 29 that has a long flyover ramp that goes over a bridge. Basically a stack interchange similar to western loop over I-40.
Schedule for the remaining sections. There are a few errors on the map. "I-77" is suppose to be I-73 and they left out I-785 on the eastern leg. Also I-40 is not routed on the loop.
The section that opens in February has a bridge over wetlands thats nearly a mile long.
Washington, DC I-495
Richmond I-295
Raleigh I-440, I-540
Charlotte I-485
Atlanta I-285, etc., etc., etc.
I still don't understand why the loop can not be signed I-840 (I-685, I-473) all the way around even if it shares other designations in parts. Seems like a situation of working really hard to go against the grain, and against interstate naming conventions.
"Connecting Interstate routes and full or partial circumferential beltways around or within urban areas carry a three-digit number. These routes are designated with the number of the main route and an even-numbered prefix."
Drove over the new section a few days ago, it felt very weird driving out there in what was one fields and trees. Amazing how fast and efficient they're doing this. But I see alot of cyclist still cycle on the Bryan blvd to battleground bridge portion, is that legal?

It was my understanding that it will be signed I-840 when the loop is fully completed. Am I wrong?
NCDOT should've left I-85 on it's original alignment through Greensboro and signed the entire loop as I-840 (I-73 & I-785 overlaps notwithstanding).
Yep and most cities do that. Its certainly less confusing.
