Just got back from hanes mall. Haven't been there in about two years but boy has it changed in that time frame. too many independent stores and alot of empty kiosk. Really reminded me of Four seasons. Food court had a pitifully selection. Mostly Asian foods to choose from... Afraid this mall will only get worse as most companies are focusing on life centers so they propably won't invest in updates ... By the way how many shoes stores does a mall need?? Ever other store seemed to be a shoe store definitely not the hanes mall I grew up. Heck not even the same mall as it was back in early 2000s.
Im surprise they haven't built a major lifestyle center similar to Friendly in Greensboro. Indoor malls are falling out of popularity and people feel less safe. Winston-Salem should build a lifestyle center downtown with real streets similar to Peninsula Town Center in Hampton, Virginia. Business I-40 and Hwy 52 intersect downtown so maybe something like this could be built in the innovation quarter in two to three block area.

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. I don't know if Winston has the economy to sustain a more modern outdoor shopping center at this point. They have small ones like Thruway and Reynolda Village, but neither offer the variety of retail, service, restaurants, and movie options of a Friendly Center or Southpoint.

Sure Winston could sustain another shopping center. If anything, the "problem" (if you see it as one) is that Hanes isn't dying quickly enough. Had Hanes been in dire straits 10 or 15 years ago, it might have gone the way of Oak Hollow or someplace, and another developer might have attracted some of those big anchors and built something else.
I do think it will continue to peter out, frankly. People just don't go to indoor malls like they used to. No biggie. I'd rather see growth downtown, myself. I prefer to avoid the whole Hanes Mall Blvd/Stratford cluster when I can. And with all the development happening around the Little Creek area, I'd be surprised if a new lifestyle center didn't eventually pop up out that way. Heck, The Shoppes at Little Creek could grow into one with some infill and a few big anchors.

Winston-Salem is doing something to set itself apart. WFIQ comes to mind. And there's a good opportunity to integrate retail and entertainment, and there are plans underway to do so.
