High Point University is getting an arena and conference center
A small hotel will be built adjacent to the arena. A location has not been selected yet but it will also host concerts and other entertainment events.

I think the location of Oak Hollow Mall would be an excellent location for this. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if this is exactly what they have in mind and it's just a matter of working out the details.

I also wonder if the arena would be expandable. 4500 seats should do just fine for current needs (may even be a bit larger than needed). But what about if the school continues to expand (which seems to be the plan)? I know those details aren't known, but it would be good to find out down the road.

The name of University will include the President name and his wife. ' Nido & Mariana Qubein Arena'
Um lol, it easier to just call it HPU Arena

Dillard's still owns it's space and Sears did as well at one point. From what I have gathered Dillard's and Sears were not included in OHM's $9 million sale price. I don't know the status of Sears' space.
Point being demolishing the mall is out.

But how does that stroke Dr. Qubein's ego?

Triad Business Journal article reported that a school spokesperson said it would be built on the main campus.

Yep. I read an article about an hour ago that specifically said that they will be building it on the North end of campus, and definitely not the mall area.

Looks like the school would name the new building for someone who made a contribution to HP basketball, such as Jerry Steele. I'm sure the president's name is plastered all over the campus by now?

The Oak Hollow Mall site seems better fitted for an eventual football stadium, if/when they develop a team.
