I am a 27 year old male looking to attend grad school in NC. This month I will be visiting App State, UNC-Greensboro and ECU. I have heard wonderful things about App State and ECU from student review websites and grad school websites (90% positive) but only negative things about UNC-Greensboro (80% negative). If anyone that lives in the area, or has gone to school there could tell me the real scoop on the crime surrounding the school and the housing situation/parking I would appreciate it.
I got my bachelor's at a school in NJ and now go to UNCG for teaching. I think it's a much better school than my original school. It's real close to downtown and overall very nice-looking. It is close to high crime areas, but the actual campus is safe. Ive never seen a crime or known someone who has seen one. Most of the crimes tend to be gang-related anyway, so if your a blood or a crypt then you might want to consider a different school. UNCG is a good school and if they have a good geography dept., then you should def check it out.
UNCG is not close to high crime areas, and there are no bloods or crips hanging around there. The most you will probably experience is a panhandler or two on tate street. For the most part, UNCG is surrounded by extremely nice neighborhoods (College Hill, College Park, Sunset Hills, Westerwood) but across the tracks is Lee Street (perhaps NCaprio83 is referring to this area?) where there are some sketchy areas. But UNCG is working hard to clean up that whole section and the neighborhood south of the G, Glenwood, is also working hard. Many, many students rent in Glenwood now.
UNCG is a good school and Greensboro pretty much has everything you need.
rawlee1: My husband and I are moving to GSO so he, too, can attend a grad program at UNCG. Over the last couple of years that we have been scouting, the improvements that YHT is referring to are visible.
We liked the feel and atmosphere at the campus and its surrounds, and especially the city of Greensboro. If we won the lottery this weekend, we'd move there next week.
And UNCG does have a good reputation. Also, for the field that Mr. Arizona is going to, UNCG has an APA certified program in Psychology, which isn't as common as one would think.
I think you'll like it fine.
