My wife and I are considering relocating from Portsmouth NH to North Carolina for my job in Statesville NC. We really like living in Portsmouth because of the downtown area - tons of bars/restaurants and plenty of events during the summer at the parks. All that is within walking distance to our house.

We're looking for a similar place to live near statesville. I'd like to keep my drive under 40 minutes so We are looking at towns closer to Winston Salem and Charlotte.

Any recommendations for areas around Statesville where we can be close to a "downtown" area with things to do, but still be able to buy a single family home (don't want an apartment or condo)? Price isn't a concern as all the houses we've seen around the area are within our budget.

How's the traffic in the morning commuting west from the Winston Salem area? Any nice suburbs with a downtown west of the city?

I don't think you're going to find THAT anywhere in NC. You can approach it, or get bits and pieces of it,
more in various places than others... but you'll never find the entirety. Anywhere in NC.

That settled... the question then becomes about what you CAN expect to find...
where you can be close to a "downtown" area with things to do.

And the only way to answer these questions is to visit and spend some time poking around.
One of the places for that list is Salisbury. It's still a 40 minute commute. LINK

Charlotte and Winston are closer to an hour commute but do offer more to do.

Winston-Salem might work for you, although your commute will be more than 40 minutes...more like 50 minutes. Lewisvile is a cute town west of W-S, but its very small. Davidson meets your criteria pretty well, although its also on the small side.
