The 20% figure is for one specific accounting/finance position, in a specific industry and size of company...it's just from my job searches over many years. The salary variance could be more (or less) in another position, industry, etc. of course. I haven't found an accurate source for reliable statistics like this.

And then there's the red state health insurance issues very much unlike what you have in CA.
I'll add the $40k is right about the median household income for Winston-Salem...so that should provide for an average house, average car, average food expenses, average kids (lol) etc.
