I recently participated in a salsa dancing class at the community arts center in Greensboro. It was fun, I met a lot of new folks and burned some calories. I met an older woman who recently moved from the beach to Winston-Salem there and she said she couldn't find salsa lessons in Winston, so she drove to Greensboro. She was surprised because there were salsa lessons available to her while she was living at the beach, but not in Winston. It got me thinking about how diverse the arts representation was in the community center. I saw rehearsal spaces, studios, art galleries, classrooms and a theater. I don't see that in my hometown of Winston, which itself boasts a large, vibrant arts community. There are multiple spots for folks to partake in the visual arts. However, most seem to be in the same geographic area, but not housed in the same building as is the case in other cities. I also noticed that the Greensboro community arts center is non-profit and appears to be tied the parks and rec dept. I don't think that's the case for Winston-Salem. It would be great to have a space to teach nominally-priced arts classes to the community in Winston in a central location. It's somewhat disconcerting for a City of the Arts to not be supported by local government. Any ideas about why that is? Not attempting to start any "city wars", but I was just curious about other perspectives.

I don't think she looked very hard. W-S has the oldest arts council in the country:The Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County | Setting the Stage Where Art Flourishes

Sawtooth School for Visual Arts: Sawtooth School for Visual Art

Salsa Dance lessons ( and much more) at City Parks and Rec: http://www.cityofws.org/portals/0/pd...er%202013).pdf

And lots more...

I know UNCSA has a community music school for all ages, as well as acting and dance programs aimed at the community, though I think those are just for kids.

Neither I (or did the woman in the class) found the class online and I'll assume because it's in pdf instead of html format. I knew that Winston offered these artistic classes and am well aware of its artistic roots, but I think these activities all being in different locations is the reason why it's difficult to locate. It would be nice to have all of those artistic activities in one central location. I used to work at UNCSA. I know all about the dance and music lessons they offer and yes, no adults, only kids. Good looking out, it's good information.
