A news link about an effort to land a major league franchise back in the late 1990s to the Triad. Remember that? The Minnesota Twins were threatening to leave Minnesota because the city didn't want to build a new stadium. Don Beaver tried to lure a team to the Triad with a stadium being built on the Guilford/Forsyth County line. A prepared food tax would have paid for the stadium but taxpayers in both counties voted against it. Today such an effort would get even less support now that Greensboro and Winston-Salem have built successful downtown minor league ballparks that are attracting development.

I'm new to the Triad (moved here in 2011) and NC (moved to the state in 2005)...I remember reading something about this. I'm perfectly happy with having multiple options for minor league ball rather than a single major league team.

Not sure why the sudden renewed interest but, if memory serves correct the proposal was a raw deal for Triad residents in the sense of the Twins would have reaped all the benefits while taxpayers would be on the hook for everything else. The investor(s) were not making a strong enough commitment to the Triad.

From what I understand, the owner of the Twins wasn't too thrilled with the Triad and that he was bluffing. He mocked the Triad and referred to it as cow pastures. But Major League Baseball did approve the move to the Triad regardless. It would have been interesting to see what the owner of the Twins would have done if voters had voted yes. I was a supporter back then but I would be against any effort today. There has just been to much investment in and around the downtown stadiums.
